The data would still be recoverable, you'd have to use a data eraser on the entire drive after formatting. Something that utilises an approach to government data destruction standards. British HMG IS5 (Infosec Standard 5), American DoD 5220.22-M, and the Gutmann method which features a 35-pass overwrite.
Then pull the drive apart with a torx set and jiffy lighter fluid the physical media and smashing it with a peen hammer.

You just really can't over emphasize that. Anyone on this or similar boards should be encrypting their drives with Veracrypt at the highest level.
