Yasuke was a slave bought by oda nobunaga purely because black people were a novelty in Japan. He was made a retainer in the same way Caligulas horse was made consul. Yasuke was kept primarily to be shown around like a freak show attraction, and there is no record whatsoever of him actually participating in any battles while being held as property by nobunaga. The biggest story about him was about how nobonaga ordered him to take a bath and was surprised to see that his skin remained black after bathing. The other story was that yasuke likely fucked some whores while he was there, as there were reports of half-negro Japanese warriors following the tike yasuke was stated to have been present in Japan. In summary, yasukes only achievements in life were being a black man owned by a Japanese warlord, and that was about it. He did nothing, his story was entirely concerned with what he had looked like and where he had come from. Very likely he was treated more as an object or pet than as a person, a treasure to be obtained, not anyone to be taken seriously. The story of yasuke ends with nobonagas death, while the other retainers were executed, yasuke was offered freedom and he took it, whereafter he was taken back into slavery by the Dutch sailors and never heard from again. This is not an honorable end. Yasuke chose to be allowed to flee the country like a cowards rather than do the noble thing in that society, which is to die with honor in loyalty to one's lord. It symbolizes that yasuke had no understanding of the Japanese spirit, and mo love for the man he had ostensibly been sworn to serve. His end was the ignoble end of a dishonorable coward.
