Can somebody still make it without AC?

submitted by Conspirologist to AskUpgoat 11 monthsJul 20, 2024 06:27:10 ago (+3/-1)     (AskUpgoat)

I've got always AC turned on in my home and car. If I'm somewhere without AC, I can last only few minutes, and start feeling sick. When I was young, my parents didn't need AC at all. I wonder if the temperature is really becoming hotter, or if it's because the level of humidity is becoming higher.

Air conditioning is bourgeois decadence comrade.

The heat gets more difficult as I age. Haven't noticed the same issue with cold temps.

Me too. I just freezed my balls once, because it was too cold, but I was OK when I put winter underwear. But I can't stand the heat now at all.

65 y/o, just bought my first AC about 12 days ago because of this hot spell in the North East. Hate AC, but ...
It's off now.

"I wonder if the temperature is really becoming hotter, or if it's because the level of humidity is becoming higher."

Neither. It is because you've conditioned yourself to be a pussy.

Hardly anybody has ac in their houses up here. Its only 2 weeks above 100 here

No, you're just a massive pussy.

My father-in-law grew up on a farm in Canada. No heat, AC, or even insulation in the walls. It made him impervious to temperature. He’s an electrician that owns his own business. He keeps retiring, but he gets bored. He’s 84, and works in Texas attics three days a week. You could bake a ham up there in the summer. He doesn’t turn on the AC in his home, he just opens all the windows. I think his home is miserable in the Texas summer, but he feels fine.

He’s a tough old bird.

Don't come to Australia. You won't like it.

You're weak. Come to straya, freezing during winter and sweltering during summer. Only the rich have AC.

Even some public buildings don't have consistently functional AC.

You're old.

Your body actually gets used to different climates and temperatures after about 2 or 3 days I find. I find that if I'm not in AC and not exposed to AC my body will pretty quickly get used to temperatures in the '80s without any trouble and even in the 90s as long as there is a breeze or a fan. But if you're going to AC and then you come out into the heat that's when you have trouble. Same thing goes true for the cold. If I'm not sitting in heated rooms all the time and I'm actually exposed outdoors quite a bit my body adapts fairly quickly and I can be out in shorts in 40° weather. It's kind of shocking even to me.

Don't be a clown.

I have AC and don't like it. I grew up without it. It was always this hot. It gets uncomfortable and you sit in front of a fan, open the windows of your car and try to park in shade.

"You have a brain tumour, You're getting headaches you just haven't noticed and your stomach is queasy more often than it should be.

You need to be an advocate for your own self as a patient. Doctors are dismissive and quick to write prescriptions and send you home"

There. You have just been programmed if you're being a suggestible ass.

Sounds like you just became a pussy.

There has been no change in global temps and humidity fluctuates as it always has.

If you grew up where you're at you just got weaker and more sensitive.

Lift bro, and get outside more.

Having no AC in a humid region can be wretched, I give you that. But come on, you can get used to the humidity enough to survive longer than a few minutes without AC. I think the other commenters figured it out; you are not going outside enough.

Couple years ago my ac at home went out. It was about this time of year and I live in an area of Florida affectionately call The Swamp. At the same time, the ac at work took a shit too. Let me tell ya something, the heat can and will drive you insane. Spent about ten days like that and at the end we ended up getting a hotel room just to escape it.

That said, about twice I year I go camping for a week. When I come back from that, climate control feels so unnatural that it also fucks with me.

All that to say that there's two sides to this coin. But yeah, 6000000% humidity in 100° weather is mother nature's way of showing anyone that they're a fuckin pussy compared to the other creatures of her kingdom.

There's a military school in Florida. We'd spend all day outside doing stupid shit like running and whatnot, go inside and work on boring shit I've figured out years before, then go drinking outside for most of the night.

It absolutely sucked at first but then I got used to it. Being young and in shape helps though, a lot. If you're fat or just out of shape it's going to effect you more.

Never had an AC, and avoid any prolonged conditioning of air besides a fan. The trick...being outside every morning no matter the weather, thereby balancing ones immune system by resonating with change.

[ - ] Questionable_2 9 points 11 monthsJul 20, 2024 06:39:57 ago (+9/-0)

It means you never go outside you're not acclimated to the hot temperature. Same during the winter, if you spend the majority of your time inside in the heat, the cold will feel worse. Go outside!

I agree with OP however I love being out in the sun on a hot day. Being stuck in a hot building with no AC is comparing apples to oranges.

I spend most of my day working on my house outside in 100f+ weather. I got sun burned working on the shaded side of the house.

You get used to the heat. So much so that the AC temp inside the house slowly creeps up as I get used to it.
