I'm thinking about buying a Hamilton Ventura wristwatch - Upgoat

I always recommend caution with lower end timepieces.
If you want something affordable and excellent, obtain a Japanese market Seiko - not an export model.
The movements on the domestic options are first rate.

This is sound advice. There is nothing wrong with a quartz Seiko, Citizen or Bulova. Resale will be impossible, though. Even if you pay $2K for like the highest-end Bulova Precisionist, no one will want it in 10 years whereas the Hamilton will have interest.

Also: Some of us have the automatic/Swiss itch to scratch.

Hamilton is great. Tissot is decent. Oris might be a 1/4 step better.

I have a state of the art sun dial with built-in orienteering capabilities, I know when the sun comes up and when it sets every day, flawlessly too.

The Hamilton XXL auto is a nice watch for 1900. It's the same vibe but much more of a statement piece with a desirable automatic wind. Quartz isn't a value at any price.

I own a few Hamiltons.i prefer their thinline watches. I like the Ventura. I've never heard anything bad about it. I would buy one without hesitation.
I'd also buy the vintage model, not the redeux. You may need a service on it but not a big deal.

Nope, depreciating asset. If you do buy one off ebay, take it to a hamilton dealer to verify it's authentic. Lots of asian imitators on almost all watches. I have a knock off Patek Phillip from Hong Kong or Bejing, forget which, that is amazing. Even cheap quartz timepieces keep great time.
