It's the Japanese government that triggered it.
They made a rate hike in order to stabilize the Yen vs Dollar.

Why does this affect US stock market? Because day traders have been taking loans in Japanese yen at low interest, and the converting to dollars and gambling in the stock market. The rate hike means they have to cash in stocks to pay new rate, thus stock price plummet as demand goes down and supply goes up.
Possibly cause of bitcoin crash too.
