I am sure you mean 5mm, a little less than 1/4". laser welding is great and has its uses. It's not a replacement for other welding processes, just another option for welding sheet metals. Most welding processes need shielding against welding flashes.
It is an amazing tool for sure, but it's use is limited to very specific mass production settings.
Imagine how dangerous it would be if the same technology was developed-scaled up to be used on 3/8 inch think plate steel. Welders could literally slice their hands off in a second or less.
