This does not mean that. This is the opposite of an "everything in moderation, bros" quote.
Epicetus is literally saying freedom ISNT from giving in to desire. Its to controlling the DESIRE, not controlling the USE. Its saying remove the WANT to truly be free.
Stop drinking. Find another way. Remove the desire for escape.
Its to controlling the DESIRE, not controlling the USE.
That's where you are wrong, I'll explain it a little further on.
It's not about being puritanical when it comes to controlling behaviours. The quote is about stop feeding desire. Can you exercise self-control and discipline to enjoy the things in life without them ruling over you.
Bad vices could be poor dietary habits, its only an issue if you are driven by addiction and impulsiveness to continually seek out poor food choices rather than using it as a treat. It's a very narrow mindset if you think the only way to manage vices is by going cold-turkey on anything you believe you can't moderate successfully.
a) Take life for example...free to move up/down + left/right + front/back, yet constrained from inception towards death. One can only be FREE to choose if one can choose in-between a DOMinating offer to choose from.
Ask yourself...Free to choose from what? Free to choose within where? Free to choose why?
Does all perceivable dominate ones free perception? Without all perceivable; would ones perception be free to see anything?
No it doesn't...that's not...
a) What if others suggest nihil-ism (Latin nihilo; nothing) to tempt one to ignore aka de-nial everything perceivable?
b) You are free to choose "no" right? Are you free to choose "no" when it comes to hunger and thirst or does your free will of choice gets forced to choose to eat and drink in response to a dominating natural law? You are still free to choose what to eat and drink right?
c) Are you free to touch a butt or does a butt has to exist for you to be free to touch it?

Once you cease desire and perpetually live in the moment, content and fulfilment will come to you like you've never imagined.

Another fag post fetch my fiddle
Play a sad song of lament
Better to wear a pair of workboats of cement
Tossed off of yonder bridge into raging river
Cry at the so sad cemetery plot, remember to bring a tissue for snot
It’s not that you suffer from self control
You suffer from mind control
It’s as simple as the fact that you will not look away from this comment no matter what dumb shot I might/will will say
Sure occasionally clever with my verse you are forced to read the next adverse
Ready? Okay.
Fuck you die, kinda lazy today.
But, if I were to pause this typing for just long enough to crack another beer and have another puff
…hmmm., seems I now may give much a care for your welfare

b) Control implies con (together; with) rota (wheel; roll; revolve), which turns one against each other, hence CONTRO = CONTRA.

b) Can there be more than everything perceivable? Can others suggest more than everything perceivable?
c) What is more than energy?
