Well, look. The inevitable result of being a serial killer is that you get to have your fun and maybe even a bit of satisfaction for a while. After that, you're a lifelong target and being tracked for the rest of your life. Perfection isn't possible, even though there's killers that have gotten away with it for years before getting caught by a fluke. Fingerprints and evidence erode, but can be maintained properly if you piss off the police just enough. Some of them talk to the victim's families and forge lifelong bonds with them, too, which is just a side effect of being human.

TL:DR Being a serial killer is like stacking up credit card debt. You might be okay with a small amount of it, but it's never something that will benefit you. So don't, and why would you anyway?
