Ultimately, that was women again. The abolitionist movement in the US in the 19th century began largely by women championing that cause, Yankees mostly. Men got on board because they thought it was the "right" thing to do. The Democratic party decried it, but it picked up steam, particularly when the Republican party was formed. During the war of Northern aggression, when the actual reason for the war was changed mid-way to the cause of freeing the slaves, women were at the forefront of producing anti-slavery propaganda, particularly "Uncle Tom's Cabin". These were women who likely never even saw a negro in their lives.

I think there were men and women in the abolitionist, including William Lloyd Garrison and John Brown. But in the end, women could not vote for Lincoln. Women did not fight the civil war, promoted by northern industrialists (also not women) and women did not pass the 15th ammendment. Men did those things.

William Lloyd Garrison was at the forefront of producing anti-slavery propaganda.

Men got on board because they thought it was the "right" thing to do.
