Clarification of what is purchased is overdue by about 30 years.
If a cd is purchased, for example, is that the physical medium? If that is the case, then anything done with the contents of the medium should be totally within the purview of the user - ie, making copies.
If purchasing a cd is a "license" to the music, then that music license should follow the user forever, making the need for backup copies moot.
Media companies have been trying to claim the opposite of both cases for years - that buying the physical media does not authorize copying but will not honor a "license" for the media for the purchaser either. Time to stop this nonsense in its tracks.
