For Those of You Who Don't Understand Watch Collecting/Enthusiasm, Realize It Is Similar To Appreciating Different Aspects of Fine Automobiles Throughout History

This is Austin in Japan. He knows 30x more about Rolex and watches in general than I do and this video really shows his unbridled passion and unrestrained autism. He is able to rattle off model numbers and features and how they have evolved for the entire history of the brand. It is similar to the guy who can rattle off all of the changed features of the different production years of Ford Mustangs and could tell you the year of every model simply by viewing a darkened silhouette. His love for the hobby is pure and he is not using his encyclopedic knowledge to fuck people over like a kikey 47th Street flipper, but just to gain further enjoyment and understanding. He's a guy with 2 kids and a wife and probably a relatively modest salary who is adding watches slowly to his collection and enjoying them. Guys like this can be a little scary, though, because they're real obsessive and idealistic purists who are put off by the slightest scratch, imperfection or polishing error, whereas a Philistine like me hardly knows shit comparatively and will walk around with scratches and an off-center index or a bezel that for whatever reason does not make the requisite noise when it rotates. Austin is very much like that as is J. Anthony,

Watches are like cars. As soon as you buy one and leave the shop, your watch loses a lot of it's price. Rolex is bullshit. I know people who needed money fast and tried to sell their Rolex, but it was not worth it, because used Rolexes lose a lot from their initial price.

The funny thing is, I got a Casio for $500. I can resell it for more now, because it's a limited edition out of production.

You don't know what you're talking about. Stick to curry, chutney and dopey conspiracy theories. Your friend's watch was probably a fake or a model that nobody wanted, Rolexes are one of 4 or 5 brands that not only retain their value used, but some of them sell for 2X more than their retail price on the gray market--and that is aside from rare vintage models. IF you're lucky enough to get one from an AD, the right watch like a GMT Pepsi can be bought for like $12K and immediately flipped for maybe $19K. 2 or 3 years ago, you could have bought a Hulk Submariner for $9K and flipped it for maybe $23K. There are other models with similar markups.

I'm talking only about basic Rolexes, not special limited editions. I already said that only limited editions are worth buying.

Again, you don't know what you're talking about, so kindly see yourself out of this thread. The models I named are not special editions at all. They are in regular, steady production. They are slightly more coveted than the 4 models I have, in which 2 have gone up in value and the other two have retained 85% or so of their value.

EDIT: This thread was not set up to talk about pricing or Rolex in particular, but rather passion for watchmaking and collecting, overall. Like me, Rolex is his favorite brand, but he also has several other watches that are not Rolexes. 4 of mine are Rolex, 9 or 10 others are not.

Is it one of the Casios that shows the phases of the poop?

hey bigguy

If you had 1000 to spend on a watch, what would you get?

What about 10000?

[ - ] TheBigGuyFromQueens [op] 1 point 6 monthsOct 6, 2024 11:03:44 ago (+1/-0)

New or used? Also: What kind? Dress watch? Chronograph? GMT? Diver?

At the $1000 price point, I’m getting a Tissot Powermatic 80.

At $10,000 I’m getting a Rolex Submariner

nice choices.

I have a 2000's tag professional but one of the buttons for the stopwatch fell off.
should get it fixed.
Felt good on my wrist.

The steel bracelets on those 90’s and 2000’s Tags are certainly iconic in their own way.

I have a Momentum. It's broken. Thus ends my wristwatch collection.

Collections are a pain .. they send you broke in the first instance and weigh you down there after, since as you get old yr thoughts are filled with "what will happen to the collection when I die," it is actually hoarding .. that's how I see it anyway.

WHEN A NIGGUH DIE HE DIE U HEARD

If you want to know what happens to collections you should watch a few bought storage unit vids, see punters ransacking dead ppl's possessions searching for valuables, or look at a few eBay vids for ppl whose collections they thought would "hold their value," go for pennies in the dollar, cars no less.

Haven't worn a watch in 30 years, but I think I might still have a casio data watch from the 90s.
