Bullshit wtf! It seems somehow my laptop's hdmi is slower than it's laptop display?

submitted by CoronaHoax to Linux 6 monthsOct 12, 2024 23:12:19 ago (+1/-0)     (Linux)

I bought an expensive laptop with 4k and I was expecting performance when watching videos etc. I've already got a performant desktop that is doing great / playing smooth.

I got my laptop working and played a video I played earlier while it was still running windows and it ran like shit (now the laptop runs linux). I played the video again on the desktop and I could swear that although some scenes weren't perfect, they were indeed pretty dang smooth. I went back and forth between the laptop and desktop on the same monitor and definitely the laptop on some portions of the video was unacceptably shitably choppy. It seems that it's during times of significant large visual movement.

I ran the video again with mpv, as I had to compile vlc without vaapi support, and indeed now on the laptop's screen the video is smooth as butter, even better than the desktop on the monitor. However when the laptop was set to back mpv with the monitor, it was back to noticeable shit chop.

Wtf is my expensive ass laptop cheaping out on their hdmi hardware! wtf!

This is pissing me off because for this damn thing to be worth my time it needs to be a full desktop and laptop replacement. wtffffffffff

THESE MICROAGGRESSIONS WILL NOT STAND...MAN. Not sure why I should be angry, but I'm pissed anyway now about whatever it is as well. Hey, just watch the beverage, man.

You can Spend $5,000 on a laptop and it still wont replace a desktop.
I know I hate this truth too.
If it aint the ram its the gpu sharing,
if it aint the gpu, its the heat.

I got a ROG Zephyrus, its still not fast enough.
Its faster than most desktops sure, but you can only push it so far.

HDMI is shit and people who use HDMI should be ashamed of themselves. Unfortunately, just like VHS vs Beta, the shittier standard always seems to win.

My PC only has DP outputs so I'm good.

Many laptops will tout big GPU/Memory, while it is instead shared memory and offloads lots of data onto the cpu instead. This, of course, makes everything 2x worse as now the cpu and gpu must share memory and clock/processing cycles.

You'll notice on laptops, and some cheapo desktop motherboards, that sound will get choppy when too much is going on. It's the same thing with sound, only sound cards have all but disappeared into a single chip on the motherboard. This has predictable effects on cheaper/less-ethical boards.

There's also a huge problem with heat throttling, as the newer laptops run far too hot for their form factor. All that power and they can't get rid of the heat fast enough.

Ya I was doing some testing thinking different sound outputs were cutting into cpu and things that shouldn’t be done in cpu / normal ram were in this case because of it being a laptop.

For now it seems solved close enough or solved so looking forward to the new episode of from tomorrow!

That sort of makes sense, though, if you think about it. Shouldn’t be noticeable, though.

That’s Windows for you.

the laptop on some portions of the video was unacceptably shitably choppy. It seems that it's during times of significant large visual movement.

Interesting. What’s the refresh rate of the laptop’s built in display, and what’s the refresh rate of the attached display?

I ran the video again with mpv, as I had to compile vlc without vaapi support, and indeed now on the laptop's screen the video is smooth as butter, even better than the desktop on the monitor. However when the laptop was set to back mpv with the monitor, it was back to noticeable shit chop.

Aha. What’s the rest of the codec information? I think we can figure out where it’s lacking in hardware. What CPU does it have?

I think I figured it out! If I have the audio going through the hdmi, then the choppiness may happen. However if I have the audio go to the laptop speakers, monitor smooth as butter!

That’s Windows for you.

Absolute bullshit! More disgusting than expected and also embarrassing! Had family over and I went to show off the new laptop and despite having a 17" screen instead of 14", the video was so bullshit I had to turn it off and go back to the other laptop!

Interesting. What’s the refresh rate of the laptop’s built in display, and what’s the refresh rate of the attached display?

I was also just checking this.. thinking maybe if I lowered the refresh rate on the monitor I could get the performance.. (video was 23 fps), but seems I figured out another solution!

I did a benchmark on the laptop vs the desktop, both gentoo and both damn good hardware, the laptop being 6 cores and ht and the desktop "just" 6 cores, the desktop performed better cpu wise.
