Smashed garter spring on a CV axle replacement

submitted by MaryXmas to cars 6 monthsOct 17, 2024 16:24:21 ago (+7/-0)     (cars)

I am replacing the front CV axels on my older Japanese car - drivers side went fine. Passenger side was leaking after a few hundred feet. I took it apart again and found a smashed garter spring right at the end of the cv axle seal. The actual deal looks ok. I am trying to find a replacement, any ideas where to get such a thing? The shops near me didn't have the axle seals so I don't think they will have a garter spring. I get the idea that this is part of the seal, is this even necessary if the seal is in place?

Yeah, you need a new seal. The spring keeps the seal tight to the axle. Sorry

I've had good luck finding off the wall shit on ebay and RockAuto. RA's website kinda sucks but they are an excellent parts seller. Good luck. I did the brakes on my ford ranger today. Now that I'm semi retired I enjoy working on my wheels. I'm thinking about flipping a few and see if I can make some money to support my new photography gear habit. That shit's expensive.

where did you buy it?

I fucked up a caliper I bought at Monument Auto Parts, brought it back and explained that I was a retard, and they gave me another one for free.

Amazon. 8 bucks. They recycle the caliper cores- not sure how it works but they probably still made out ok. I continue to fuck up calipers... Probably need to work on mine as well ..

the trick with calipers is not using power tools

Agreed, but I never do. My slide pins get all rusted and then the boots never sit quite right. This means they will fail again in another 2 years. But I figure in 2 years I will get another car so that is enough time for me to keep this one bumping along.

Do you have a dashcam? If not, get a dashcam and let someone buy you a car. Two years is plenty of time to maintain your right of way and end up in a nofault.

The part you need is called a transaxle seal.

I was gonna say rockauto or local junkyard. Toyotas site for parts is huge and hard to navigate...does anyone know if there is an internet access portal to junkyard listings? This has come up for me previously in looking for random parts.

I heard a funny story of someone getting junk yard Honda wheels, for their Miata.

if the bolt pattern fits what's the difference between honda and toyota wheels?

I'll tell you a junk yard story...

Hand rest on the beamer had ripped leather that was abrasing my elbow. I got a vinly kit to replace it, but when I removed the arm rest it was all cracked and couldn't be put back. So I went to 8 pick n pulls. One had the part but it was rusted on. Finally on my way home, on my last pick n pull, I found this part for $10 but in black instead of walnut. Whatever. The car was worth about $3k and this part was $900 on ebay.

I am also seeing that they aren't for individual sale as they are typically included with the axle seal, but the axle seals I am seeing don't seem to have a spring included.

The spring you're mentioning is probably not supposed to be separated from the seal. You probably just need a new seal.

Yep! I just found one that I think will work. Spring included. I would have used the existing one except I smashed it in the transmission trying to get the new axle in place... 😬 At least it didn't get ground up in there so I suppose it could be worse.
