I understand the feeling but there is all kinds of information on how to screw with landlords and homeowners that rent out there house. There is a bit of trust not to provoke one another unnecessarily. The sign though is pretty trivial, they get a deal on rent so I doubt there going anywhere over it.

If I rent a home, it is legally, for all intents and purposes, mine. That includes the yard. Ownership is irrelevant.

They can still mandate you do certain things to the property. Having to trim trees, bushes, and maintain lawn often need to be kept up. A sign may be something a tenant has to shoulder, ie: if they put a for rent sign up while the tenant is still there
