Nuclear bombs like you've seen in (((media))) aren't real. However, dirty bombs are.

So a couple of things the most of the weapons designed today are designed in such a way that they will produce the least radiation possible. So if you survive the initial blast and firestorm and you're not directly downwind my guess is that the radiation would not be as much of a problem however that's with air bursts. For example Hiroshima and Nagasaki were my weapons that were exploded high in the air above the cities and that was specifically done so it would not pull up a lot of dirt and material from the ground which is how radiation is spread. That's why Hiroshima Nagasaki or octopod today. However if people start using nuclear bunker busters then they're going to drive deep in the ground and if they explode in such a way that they raised plumes of dirt then that would cause more long-term radiation to be spread over large areas so I guess you really can't know.

I am not one of these people that believe that it be widespread chaos after such a exchange in terms of the people. But that depends on where you live. If you live in Chicago well that's a crazy black infested place where they'll kill you now and it's going to be worse after total breakdown of society but if you live in a mostly white area what you'll see is the same kind of cooperation that happens after natural disasters volunteerism people coming together making sure each other get fed and help an old people. You know in Western North Carolina after the hurricane disaster we've seen people come from West Virginia and all around they're rebuilding the roads there doing all this stuff and we've seen that happen time and time again in white areas. So you want to be in white rural areas after something like that because the cooperation will be the best.

An atomic war won't play out the way you think it will.

A few nukes will explode. Very little fallout, but they'll claim there is a lot.

Then the government will take control of all food production. Plants, grains, livestock, dairy. All of it falls under government control because the land, water, rain, and air is contaminated. And only the government can say it's safe.
All farm land and equipment is seized because it's contaminated.
The only food production allowed to take place is done by government controlled collective farms.
Anyone trying to grow, sell, or even eat their own food is arrested and poisoned in prison, and their death is blamed on radiation.

Travel restrictions.
If you travel at a time, or through a place they don't want you to, your vehicle is seized (because it's irradiated) and you're imprisoned for spreading radiation. They'll poison and murder you in jail and they'll say you died of radiation.

A town has a bunch of people who think the wrong way - They'll claim the wind or rain irradiated the town, and they lose all of their property. They murder whoever they want to, but they'll blame radiation.

They'll seize whatever property they want. Murder individuals, groups, or entire cities, and blame it on radiation.
They can force an entire city to get radiation treatment. Use that excuse to murder as many people as they want. And then repopulate the city because they say it's now safe.

People will live in constant fear of invisible radiation. At any time the wind blows, or the rain falls, the government can show up and take everything you own, murder you and your family, and blame it on the invisible radiation.

Most modern Nukes are not like the old nukes that everyone thinks about(like the 50's fusion and fission bombs) They work much differently today, then warheads of yesteryear.

Todays nukes are Gamma enhanced Neutron Bombs. (US, Israel, Russia, China, India) Pac and N korea MAY also have these weapons. Its a toss up whether Iran has them. We know now that Iran does in fact have working Atom bombs, thanks to last weeks test.


These bombs have a smaller traditional blast effect, but put out huge amounts of short term radiation that kills all living animals in the blast radious, but does not cause much actual structural damage at all. The bad radiation goes to half life in about 18 months with these weapons. The cities do not get destroyed and you can move right back into them in about 24-36 months (It's the whole point of these type of weapons, so you can reclaim the cities)

Long story short. IF you can survive the first year or so, pretty good chanced you can survive the radiation left over after wards.

The collapse of society, though, is another question all together.



Fun fact: The Russkies and Chinese no longer need to even use these type of weapons. The hypersonics can hit with up to 2 megatons of kinetic force, making a warhead moot at that point. They also both have the conventional Thermobaric warheads that can generate up too at least .50- .75-ish megatones (as we've seen repeatedly used in the Ukraine)

Russia has built Subway systems that are designed to be fallout shelters and they have recently revitalized those. North Korea was completely bombed to nothing by the USA during the Korean War so that's why they have some of the deepest subway stations in the world they're specifically built as bomb shelters. We really don't have that kind of thing in the US although there may be a few remaining ones left over from the 50s and 60s.

They will bomb military targets, not just cities. Bases, silos, etc.
Get some iodine tablets just in case. They hand those out to people that live near nuclear reactors in case they melt down.

It's very unlikely that nuclear weapons will be employed as WW3 escalates. Targets will likely be first struck by supersonic missile systems designed to penetrate hardened facilities like server farms or other telecomm hubs and infrastructure. Orbital satellites are also more ideal prime targets than cities.
