We have been turned down for any FEMA assistance even though our house was severely damaged during Helene. Our FEMA rep that did the initial filing was an immigrant that could barely speak English. We have had to call the police on the FEMA investigators that are going door to door and peeping into peoples houses looking for repairs- despite posted no trespassing signs. FEMA is paying the cities to hire extra code inspectors to make sure people aren’t fixing their property without their knowledge. If you are caught, you get a cease and desist notice, a heavy fine, and have to pay to remove anything “unauthorized “. All of that counts to the 50% of value damage rule- meaning they are basically forcing people to have to shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars to be in compliance or sell their properties to the corporate investors that have suddenly popped up everywhere like cockroaches for pennes on the dollar. If you DO accept FEMA funds, there is a stipulation that they can seize the property via imminent domain if there are future damages. Hence why we aren’t contesting being denied assistance.
These changes to FEMA happened in 2021 under this administration. Ask the people in The town that got destroyed by the fire in Hawaii about what they think of FEMA. They facilitated taking the vast majority of all private property via imminent domain and resold all of it to corporate investors (donors).
Same here. I have to start paying like $650 a month for health insurance that is fucking terrible and basically just catastrophic while these fuckers can just pop into any ER for the sniffles.
Yeah that's fucked. Do you need health insurance? Sometimes it makes me a little nervous to not have it because if someone breaks a leg or something that is 1000s of dollars but maybe my name is Jose Rodrigues at the hospital. Now we don't have to pay at all.
That's essentially how I feel about it. Doesn't seem like a very White thing to do but we don't live in a White society anymore. I will just continue to hope that no one gets hurt and we stay healthy.
