Marriage in itself is not the problem, it is the involvement of the state that makes it a problem. For men the signing of a marriage contract has no upsides, no guarantees, no protection. Only a promise to lose if the marriage fails.

Look at it this way, a man marries to have a family. A wife’s support, care and nurturing of the family, is what he is asking for, and in return he will provide security, safety, financial and emotional support. When the marriage fails, he loses all that and usually access to his children that is enforced by the state. He still has to provide all of the support as promised in the contract. The woman loses nothing and only gains. The state will not force her to honor her side of the bargain, since those were all immaterial things, just promises.

There is no upside to marriage for a man as long as the state is involved. A man can still have his family without marriage. If she decides to walk away, he keeps his stuff. (Keeping in mind common law rules though.)

Marriage used to be between a man and a young virgin woman. The woman was guaranteed to likely never seen another man's dick besides your own, and you got all of her good years when she was young and sexy. Both parties were required to satiate the other sexually (i.e. I have a headache, marital rape, wasn't a thing) and couldn't just defer endlessly. They were required to help around the house and if they cheated, they were shunned from society. The man had the final say, and she respected him for that. Divorce was so taboo it might as well have been witchcraft.
