I feed all the birds, it's insane, been over feeding them since the lockdown. Looking like 40lbs of bird food will be consumed by the end of today. It's an absolute zoo in my back yard.
"HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM FUCKEN HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM YA CUNT HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM IM A FFFFFFFFFFFFUCKIN HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMINGBIRD YA FUCKEN hang on a second HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM dumbcunt.
The hummingbird syrup is 1/4 ratio of sugar and water. I put mine up this summer and had swarms of them on my porch. And then one time i left it out too long and it fermented but the birds still drank it.
I have a couple feeders in our backyard out on a barrier island in Tampa Bay. I’ll get between 15-30 Nanday parrots (I think) at a time trying to fight for position on the feeder, the rest waiting on the power lines screaming/squeaking at the others. It holds maybe a gallon volume of seed. Those beautiful bastards will clean it out in an hour- an absolute feeding frenzy. The doves will all be on the ground en masse gorging on the rain of seeds falling on them. We also get a bunch of finches, cardinals, blue jays, black birds, and such. It provides a lot of entertainment.
I've had a 120lbs of food consumed in a week once. It's like $70. Worth every penny when I see the other town residents on Facebook complain about all the pigeons and birds!
No I don’t. It interferes with their evolution. I don’t want to favor parasitic traits in birds. My emotional need to be nice to birds doesn’t help “bird-kind”.
We just moved from out of town to in town. We have fed hummingbirds for years, started with on feeder for other birds last winter when snow fell.
Will be getting some bird feed soon for winter, still lot's of natural food for them here.
We always threw a fair bit of table scraps out for birds and whoever.
We are now surrounded by oaks and have a shit ton of squirrels, which we only had a few out there. I've seen up to 7 - 10 at one time here. If I walk the neighborhood I can easily count 50 or more.
Hoping to draw in some chickadees which we had a few out there. Their aerobatic skills are incredible.
Couple of weeks after we moved here I was treated to a scene I've never seen before that was very entertaining. I've seen countless squirrels chasing each other around, up and down trees. I've only ever seen a hawk chase a squirrel around a tree this one time in my 60 years. Very cool.

Do you feed the birds?
Yes!
If you put out meat scraps (rancid or not), you can bring in all kinds of birds. The magpies will come in droves, but will all take turns at the pile in single file. The crows and ravens need a larger distance to land properly and also get into the line up with the magpies. The good part is if you do this in the area you want to grow something they'll fortify the soil for you.
I love feeding the birds!
Me too. We throw out zero food scraps now. It's amazing to see how they behave (as I mentioned).
[ - ] Dingo 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:53:34 ago (+1/-0)
Indeed. I was very surprised by this. I also found there is a perpetual war with magpies and squirrels. If you have old apples or a pile of peanuts you can see how each behave and they try to sabatoge each other.

Yup...same, since the fake pandemic....i go through a ton of birdseed and my yard is full of birds, mostly finches, but i get ducks in the spring n summer too
I don't. We have squirrels here that like to destroy shit, including any/all bird feeders. I'll let the emotionally-driven idiots 2-blocks over attract them and pay for the damage they do. At least it keeps them mostly away from my shit and my dog likes to sniff them on walks.
I fill my feeder very Friday. If they run out before then then fuck'em. I have a herd of deer coming in and shitloads of birds, many varieties. A little squirrel was pushing his luck the other day by getting on my feeder and spinning it and emptied half of it onto the ground and I shot him with a BB gun. I shot him in the ass as he ran away too. He hasn't been back. Squirrels can be really annoying sometimes. Coons too. I have my deer feeder right there with all that. I have a great view from my Lazyboy in the living room and sit there and watch out the window. My feeder is within twenty feet of my window so I sit almost every morning for a while and drink coffee and watch.
When I go out to feed the birds, those little fat snowbirds sit in the trees and quarrel at me while I do it. Its funny. Many of these deer are not scared of me at all. I keep my harvests close for when & if I need them.

They are descendants of escaped pets.
In Madeira Beach we considered them a nuisance
And they're noisy as hell.
They sound like a car wreck and a riot had baby birds.

Yellow finches loved my zinnias. Flowers would bloom, seeds barely mature and the pair would come by to get their fill.
Hummingbirds enjoy drinking from snapdragons. Was always nice to see them in the early summer mornings.
Might try to grow sunflowers...might be too hot down here for them.

The squirrels have a gang rivalry with the magpies. I saw them for days at full war trying to gain supremacy over a pile of composting apples.
It's quite amazing to see, they're both very intelligent species.
