Do you feed the birds? I love feeding the birds!

submitted by Freespeechplease to whatever 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 07:17:10 ago (+36/-0)     (whatever)

I feed all the birds, it's insane, been over feeding them since the lockdown. Looking like 40lbs of bird food will be consumed by the end of today. It's an absolute zoo in my back yard.

Mom and Dad had around 20 or so hummingbird feeders every summer. Hundreds of hummingbirds buzzing around. It was amazing.

The hummingbird syrup is 1/4 ratio of sugar and water. I put mine up this summer and had swarms of them on my porch. And then one time i left it out too long and it fermented but the birds still drank it.

[ - ] texasblood 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 08:40:06 ago (+3/-2)

Even the simplist task get fucked off by idiots.
If you can't maintain correctly why bother?
Sugar and fucking water changed out every three days.

[ - ] bobdole9 4 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:38:22 ago (+4/-0)

My local hummingbirds would drink from my snapdragons. Must've been sufficient source of nectar since they came around all summer.

It's pretty hard to fuck up "water flowers".

Most make up feed that would test 110 Jet A fuel.
It don't take much sugar

A 40# bag of sunflower seed from tractor supply is only $22.00.

I have a couple feeders in our backyard out on a barrier island in Tampa Bay.
I’ll get between 15-30 Nanday parrots (I think) at a time trying to fight for position on the feeder, the rest waiting on the power lines screaming/squeaking at the others. It holds maybe a gallon volume of seed. Those beautiful bastards will clean it out in an hour- an absolute feeding frenzy. The doves will all be on the ground en masse gorging on the rain of seeds falling on them. We also get a bunch of finches, cardinals, blue jays, black birds, and such. It provides a lot of entertainment.

TS is gay, go to your CoOp.

[ - ] con77 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:34:21 ago (+1/-0)

Those parrots aren't a native species.

They are descendants of escaped pets.

In Madeira Beach we considered them a nuisance

And they're noisy as hell.
They sound like a car wreck and a riot had baby birds.

oh, like cockatoos then.

leave em alone. start throwing shit at them they go get their mates, come back, next minute theyre literally tearing the roof of your house apart.

If he has the cash what's wrong with doing something that makes him happy without harming others? It's a hobby like most others.

[ - ] CasualObserver -1 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:44:54 ago (+0/-1)

if being too poor to keep a bird feeder going is a hobby I guess he can have at it.

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 16:25:29 ago (+1/-0)

Feeding birds to keep them on your property has AMAZING side-effects.

[ - ] CasualObserver 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 17:18:24 ago (+0/-0)

I was replying to this guy:

You must be rich, that stuff is expensive.

I always have feeders going and it isn't a big financial burden. If you cannot afford a bird feeder you should get your shit together. Right?

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 2 points 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 00:35:59 ago (+2/-0)

holy fucking shit we got goats throwing down over the right to feed birds

im more commenting on the shit fight between 'buy a feeder' and 'fuck you i use bags of seed'

im like.... cool wwiii starts over feeding the budgies.

[ - ] Freespeechplease [op] 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 09:54:23 ago (+3/-0)

I've had a 120lbs of food consumed in a week once. It's like $70. Worth every penny when I see the other town residents on Facebook complain about all the pigeons and birds!

[ - ] bobdole9 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:34:09 ago (+2/-0)

If you want to feed finches, grow a ton of zinnias. Pair of yellow finches would come by every morning picking the seeds out of the flowers.

Suppose sunflowers would be a practical option as well.

[ - ] PeBeFri 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 14:43:35 ago (+0/-0)

It's just tuppence a bag...

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 0 points 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 00:36:48 ago (+0/-0)

fuck you and my damn intrusive thoughts.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 12:04:10 ago (+2/-0)

No I don’t. It interferes with their evolution. I don’t want to favor parasitic traits in birds. My emotional need to be nice to birds doesn’t help “bird-kind”.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 14:07:57 ago (+0/-0)

Same for butterflies here. Growing plants the butterflies feed on interferes with their migration.

I'm thinking of feeding the hummingbirds though, since I'm now growing peppers and other plants for me where I used to have hummingbird favorites.

[ - ] bobdole9 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:47:53 ago (+2/-0)

Moved from the midwest to Georgia last year, so this year was the first growing season.

Yellow finches loved my zinnias. Flowers would bloom, seeds barely mature and the pair would come by to get their fill.

Hummingbirds enjoy drinking from snapdragons. Was always nice to see them in the early summer mornings.

Might try to grow sunflowers...might be too hot down here for them.

[ - ] NeedleStack 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:07:13 ago (+2/-0)

Every day. It's the best.

[ - ] registereduser 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 08:11:34 ago (+2/-0)

We just moved from out of town to in town. We have fed hummingbirds for years, started with on feeder for other birds last winter when snow fell.

Will be getting some bird feed soon for winter, still lot's of natural food for them here.

We always threw a fair bit of table scraps out for birds and whoever.

We are now surrounded by oaks and have a shit ton of squirrels, which we only had a few out there. I've seen up to 7 - 10 at one time here. If I walk the neighborhood I can easily count 50 or more.

Hoping to draw in some chickadees which we had a few out there. Their aerobatic skills are incredible.

Couple of weeks after we moved here I was treated to a scene I've never seen before that was very entertaining. I've seen countless squirrels chasing each other around, up and down trees. I've only ever seen a hawk chase a squirrel around a tree this one time in my 60 years. Very cool.

[ - ] con77 0 points 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 18:02:37 ago (+0/-0)

Cockatoos are wild down there?

[ - ] Kozel 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 12:20:01 ago (+1/-0)

No I feed niggers with foodaid by paying taxes

[ - ] Dingo 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:41:39 ago (+1/-0)

Do you feed the birds?

Yes!

If you put out meat scraps (rancid or not), you can bring in all kinds of birds. The magpies will come in droves, but will all take turns at the pile in single file. The crows and ravens need a larger distance to land properly and also get into the line up with the magpies. The good part is if you do this in the area you want to grow something they'll fortify the soil for you.

I love feeding the birds!

Me too. We throw out zero food scraps now. It's amazing to see how they behave (as I mentioned).

[ - ] PostWallHelena 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:44:59 ago (+1/-0)

So interesting that they line up!

[ - ] Dingo 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:53:34 ago (+1/-0)

Indeed. I was very surprised by this. I also found there is a perpetual war with magpies and squirrels. If you have old apples or a pile of peanuts you can see how each behave and they try to sabatoge each other.

[ - ] duke_cannon 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:40:15 ago (+1/-0)

I feed my birds. Im partial to my hummingbirds. They have come back 3 years now.

[ - ] Cantaloupe 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:51:57 ago (+1/-0)

It's fun to do. Or just grow plants they like if lazy

[ - ] fnbs 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:36:07 ago (+1/-0)

Yup...same, since the fake pandemic....i go through a ton of birdseed and my yard is full of birds, mostly finches, but i get ducks in the spring n summer too

[ - ] CasualObserver 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 09:00:43 ago (+1/-0)

how do you over feed a bird?

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:35:05 ago (+3/-0)

Raccoons start coming by wearing costumes with wings.

[ - ] Freespeechplease [op] 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 09:45:17 ago (+1/-0)

Trust me, I have the fattest birds in this town.
This weekend will be 40LBS that basically just flew away.

[ - ] CasualObserver 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:43:24 ago (+1/-0)

perhaps the other critters in the zoo you have attracted are a major contributor to that problem. birds don't overeat in my observations.

[ - ] Freespeechplease [op] 0 points 4 monthsDec 11, 2024 03:02:00 ago (+0/-0)

My birds overeat. Also the rats and squirrels are fat too. Even one of the squirrels turned black since it thinks it's on EBT

[ - ] DitchPig 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 08:52:11 ago (+1/-0)

I let pigeons live in my barn so I can shoot them and feed them to my dogs.

[ - ] Dingo 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:50:31 ago (+1/-0)

This is actually a good idea.

[ - ] texasblood 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 08:36:08 ago (+1/-0)

Feed the birds and shoot all the squirrels off the feeders.
3-4 everyday there are so many here.
No waste!
We eat every one of them.

[ - ] BoozyB 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 09:16:40 ago (+2/-0)

I've eaten squirrel. Once. Never again.
Enjoy your bounty, I guess

[ - ] Peleg 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:57:37 ago (+2/-0)

What you ate wasn't cooked correctly. If it had been you would be out there trying to shoot as many as you could.

[ - ] con77 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 10:35:48 ago (+1/-0)

Agree

[ - ] Dingo 2 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 11:44:50 ago (+2/-0)

the squirrels

The squirrels have a gang rivalry with the magpies. I saw them for days at full war trying to gain supremacy over a pile of composting apples.

It's quite amazing to see, they're both very intelligent species.

[ - ] i_scream_trucks 0 points 4 monthsDec 9, 2024 00:37:54 ago (+0/-0)

magpies are awesome but ours are a whole different species to yours.

think yours are crows, ours arent.

[ - ] Wolfspider 1 point 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 08:31:09 ago (+1/-0)

Sounds like a relaxing hobby. More power to you, and the birds.

[ - ] SteppingRazor 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 15:06:42 ago (+0/-0)

I did at one time, but then hordes of pigeons started coming around. I tried picking a few off but there were way too many.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 14:49:16 ago (+0/-0)

I don't. We have squirrels here that like to destroy shit, including any/all bird feeders. I'll let the emotionally-driven idiots 2-blocks over attract them and pay for the damage they do. At least it keeps them mostly away from my shit and my dog likes to sniff them on walks.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 0 points 4 monthsDec 8, 2024 12:10:06 ago (+0/-0)

I fill my feeder very Friday. If they run out before then then fuck'em. I have a herd of deer coming in and shitloads of birds, many varieties. A little squirrel was pushing his luck the other day by getting on my feeder and spinning it and emptied half of it onto the ground and I shot him with a BB gun. I shot him in the ass as he ran away too. He hasn't been back. Squirrels can be really annoying sometimes. Coons too. I have my deer feeder right there with all that. I have a great view from my Lazyboy in the living room and sit there and watch out the window. My feeder is within twenty feet of my window so I sit almost every morning for a while and drink coffee and watch.

When I go out to feed the birds, those little fat snowbirds sit in the trees and quarrel at me while I do it. Its funny. Many of these deer are not scared of me at all. I keep my harvests close for when & if I need them.
