In the 1980's, I moved to San Diego, California. I read a book about 3 downed flyers in a raft during WW2. The author was the captain, who lamented that he'd probably never get back to his 3 acre avocado ranch near San Diego, a ranch he called Calavo
Hmmm. I looked up his name in the white papers phone directory, and sure enough, there he was. I called him and spoke to his wife who invited me out to the avocado ranch home. She showed me the raft on the garage wall and when I asked about the fruit trees, she told me that he owns over 20,ooo acres of avocado trees, covering the entire area. She asked if I liked avocados and I said I'd never had one. She grabbed a 5 gallon bucket and we picked fruit until the bucket was full. She gave me the bucket and told me how to eat them.
I went back to San Diego where my wife and I ate them. That was my first avocado. Today we spread it on tortilla bread, add four strips of bacon and eat them like burritos. We call them - 'Guac & Roll'.
They might be a millennial food staple, but some restaurants are calling time on the ubiquitous inclusion of avocados in everyday dishes. One of the first to ban the ingredient was London restaurant Firedog, whose head chef declared: “We’re frankly bored of seeing it on every breakfast and brunch menu.” Other restaurants have followed suit, citing concerns over the food's environmental impact. Rainforest Trust UK claimed the demand for avocados was partly responsible for the devastation of some 70,000 acres of rainforest per day.
Avacados are so goddamned gross. Quacamole is even worse. Foul, musky-tasting slime, yet people pay top dollar for a disgusting fruit that tastes like offseason pussy.
At our place we have a mango tree that every now and again provides us with a lot of fruit. I'd prefer an avocado tree because its fruit is more versatile imo.
