Why do people cared so much to make ivory illegal?

There's of course the often obnoxious people just caring for animals and stuff, but their pockets usually aren't deep enough to affect law. So what's up with this? Ivory has been illegal for decades and is still around and expensive. Are the sellers so rich they could make it illegal to make even more profit? I don't get who cares so much.

Because the demand for ivory exceeds the ability to produce it. Which would end the ability to produce any ivory. So they make it a crime to poach them and it works.

I happen to be White. Many generations back, too. I know since I'm from Germany and my grandparents happened to have to check their ancestry during a certain point in history. No way to prove this, though, I guess. Not that I'd want to doxx myself if it was provable, either.

We have an incredibly intricate ivory sculpture that my MIL and FIL bought in the 1960/70s. The statue is of an asian (Japanese?) woman with a baby on her back. It really is beautiful and plastic does not compare. The craftmanship is exquisite, they even carved details into the bottom of the woman's shoes. My MIL has many other ivory statues and jewelry, some of it is very pretty, some of it is just a waste of an elephant.

I think elephants are majestic and intelligent beings and I wish they were not hunted at all, and that people would just collect tusks when an elephant dies of old age. But people are stupid.
