Just had to say goodnight to our 23 year old cat, not a good evening!.

So I just wanted to share(as I mentioned this day was coming recently on a thread about something else), this is the final image of a cat that has been part of my family for 23 years, he was as old as my son.

He has been a fantastic cat but for the last 6 months or so my wife and I have been putting off the inevitable, he was still very alert, had all his own teeth but was deaf and going blind(as well as many other things starting to go wrong), we had a discussion about it last week and both agreed that we were only keeping him alive because he's our old boy, we felt this was unfair as he hasn't had much quality of life for the last couple of months and with this at the forefront of the decision we made the choice to let him be put to sleep whilst my wife cuddled him.

Broke my wife's heart in all honesty as I've always been the one to do such things(with all of our dogs) but she wanted to and as he was very much her cat I felt it was the right thing to do for her even though she sobbed her little heart out.

It was all very peaceful and quick but fuck, these days are so hard, beautiful in a strange way, but very hard on everyone involved.

Anyway, been an awesome cat, this was his 3rd and final visit to the vets in all those years, I wanted to bring him home and bury him but we opted for a cremation as if I had bought him homey retriever would have dug him up most likely.

Tabby you were an awesome little cat, rest well kitty!.

my cat died when he was 21

his rear legs gave out and he couldn't walk

I put him in the front yard that day with food and water on a blanket

next day a vet came and gave him an injection

it was very sad that he suffered his last day like that

I'm sure you're cat didn't love you any less, that's a good age and you did what you felt was best and ended it as quickly and humanely as you could. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, I’m so sorry. 😞 Hearing about your wife’s broken heart broke mine too.

I mean it, man.

Man that really sucks. Losing a pet is one of the hardest loses one can go through. Keep the head up. I had to put my childhood dog down back in September. Still get worked up sometimes thinking about her. Just got to keep on going and what definitely helps is getting a new pet not too long after. I got a new dog and although she isn't my old pal it for sure has helped. Last year was a tough one. I lost my grandpa, my uncle, my friend, and my dog all within the span of July-September. The dog was the hardest to shake. From one random guy on the internet take care man and don't let it rock your world. Gotta keep going.

I'm surrounded by dogs and so will be fine, but thank you.

You went through the mill there, thanks for sharing and I hope your life is on the mend and I also hope you don't ever have to go through anything similar again.

It's natural that we all pass, but when those close pass very near to each other it takes the wind out of your sails, I've been there also, you take care.

I'm not a cat lover but it's always hard to lose someone or an animal that's close to you...but just like good songs on your favorite album..."OLD RECORDS NEVER DIE"...

[ - ] Cunty [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:09:43 ago (+1/-0)

Very true and I'm more of a dog person in general(never had the possibility of bears), but each to their own lol. Hug your bears for me.

This spring I will

Good man.

With proper management, many people with an enlarged heart can live full and healthy lives. However, if the condition is left untreated, it can lead to serious complications, such as heart failure.

Good to hear your wife has avoided this condition. More seriously, RIP to kitty.

After 30 years of no pet, I've started thinking of getting another Mexican Red Leg tarantula again. Was a sad day when mine fell off my shoulder and died.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 4 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 17:52:53 ago (+4/-0)

Lol, thanks for the comment.

23 years! He lived longer than most which is proof you provided exceptional care.

Thanks for your comment.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 4 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 19:31:52 ago (+4/-0)

Aww dude, I'm so sorry. He looks like you could pet the shit out of him all day and he'd take it!

23 years is a good run for one of satans spawn and you should be happy with all the evil it conjured at every opportunity.

It'll be a hole for awhile and there's nothing you can do about it and in a sense, it should be because of how important he was.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:03:35 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks buddy. He was a killer all his life.

[ - ] PostWallHelena 4 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 18:36:43 ago (+4/-0)

RIP tabby. I remember the same painful decision with my lab. I still think of that bastard often, he was a special boy.

They all are buddy.

Sorry, fren, I dread the day my cat has to go.

[ - ] __47__ 4 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 18:12:58 ago (+4/-0)

Sorry for your loss goat. Ya did the right thing. I very been there before. Lost four cats and a dog in a year. It's much better to be there with them when they go than to find them on the floor where their tank ran out.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:14:09 ago (+0/-0)

Agreed, thank you.

[ - ] 3Whuurs 3 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 00:36:17 ago (+3/-0)

I wish it was easier to just be grateful for the time you get, without the sorrow of it.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 02:47:44 ago (+0/-0)

Very true.

[ - ] Indoctrinated_USA 3 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 19:46:23 ago (+3/-0)

I'm sorry for your loss.
For others though, you should know that many vets now perform in home euthanasia.
I chose my vet for this reason; when it's time to say goodbye to my little loves, I want them to be home when it happens.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:16:56 ago (+0/-0)

Thank you and a very good point about home visits. I hadn't considered that in all honesty but I know our vets don't do that. Good information for anyone else reading this thread though.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:19:16 ago (+0/-0)

No, we are moving house shortly and 2 big digs are enough to deal with at this point lol, perhaps when we move.

[ - ] bobdole9 3 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 19:10:04 ago (+3/-0)

I thought my 16 and 18 year old cats had a long life.

Far longer life than most cats get to experience, sucks that it was his time, but now he's not hurting.

[ - ] ProudRebel 3 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 18:54:55 ago (+3/-0)

More than a cat, that's family. So sorry for your loss!

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:18:05 ago (+0/-0)

Thanks and you're correct.

[ - ] Niggly_Puff 3 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 18:28:52 ago (+3/-0)

23 years? Wow. I thought my cat was old. I am sorry for your loss 😿

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:13:33 ago (+0/-0)*

Thank you. Yes, 23 years, vets only twice until last night, only ever had one set of vaccinations and was an outdoor cat that used to kill, fight and protect his territory from any and every cat. Literally never had a day of illness in all that time. One vet visit was for vaccination and the other was a result of killing a squirrel that made a clean deep slice in his skull at the front lol, so many stories about that cat lol.

The hardest part of being a pet owner is knowing when to say goodbye.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:11:45 ago (+0/-0)

Very very true.

[ - ] Bonanza 3 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 18:12:17 ago (+3/-0)

My sincere condolences. I know from personal experiences that it's tough. On everyone.

My uncle died after 2 grueling months in the hospital. I don't have a problem with death itself, but the pointless suffering. Sorry about your cat. I have two myself. He probably lived as good of a life as he could get. I think we keep pets because life is a bitch for the rest of us but we create a heaven for these pets because it might be the only one that exists.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:21:13 ago (+0/-0)

I agree with your comments about pointless suffering.

[ - ] prototype 2 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 23:40:46 ago (+2/-0)

RIP your cat.

GreenSaint didn't even come in with the cat hate.

Yes, I'm surprised also lol.

23 is an epic age in cat years, well done Tabby!

Also well done for being with him all the way, it's the only correct action. Many pet-owners lose courage, yet it's the worst thing for the pet to feel abandoned by one's life-long family, so staying together was most important of all.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 03:00:06 ago (+1/-0)

Exactly, my daughter in an old job worked at a vets, she would be the one to stay with people's pets when they wouldn't go through with them to be put to sleep. She was saying to need yesterday that some people would just bring in their pet, turn them over and pay the bill, then out the door. Is that a way to treat am animal that's given you the love that they did?, this is why I hate people sometimes.
I've done this many times with our previous dogs, it's a horrible but beautiful job and I think your correct in everything you stated.

[ - ] Cantaloupe 2 points 3 monthsJan 21, 2025 21:48:11 ago (+2/-0)

That's sad. It was the right choice. No doubt he had a happy life and was well cared for.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 02:55:19 ago (+1/-0)

Hopefully, we all do our best I think, love of animals is shared by many people.

[ - ] JudyStroyer 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 11:26:46 ago (+1/-0)

Thanks for sharing, fren. Pets connect with us on a different level. Their time is almost always shorter than ours making this pain an inevitable experience. Even knowing this, I will always have at least a few of these fuzzy buddies around until my time here expires. I cry every time I lose one of my friends, as I consider these “pets” more meaningful to me than the rest of humanity with the exception of a very few people.
The fact the you and your family got to experience such longevity with your little friend is a blessing in itself. Just know he is resting now. Thankful for all the love, treats, and food you shared with him.

Why does this have 64 upvotes. Do people here love cats that much.

[ - ] Cunty [op] 0 points 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 04:24:47 ago (+0/-0)

It's probably because it's original content as opposed to regurgitated news , views etc.

Who knows, I'm an animal lover.

[ - ] paul_neri 1 point 3 monthsJan 22, 2025 00:31:52 ago (+1/-0)

You have my great sympathy. I didn't read much of what you've said - too distressing.
