500+ year old Legacy Live Oak from my walk today

Picture doesn't do it justice. The trunk at the base was easily 15' wide. This tree was likely the grandfather of every live oak in that part of the pine flats.

When you hear the oak wood is much stronger than pine you don't really understand why that is until you look in an oak tree and you realize the strength that the limb has to have at the trunk to hold the rest of the limb out at a pure horizontal for such a huge distance. Just imagine the lever arm on any one of those huge branches sticking way out to the side of that oak tree's trunk. And then realize that the wood where it joins the trunk has to hold all that weight through storms and wind and everything else. That's why oak is so incredibly strong.

A tonic to see. The Orcs are in the shire over here in my part of the PNW, cutting like mad for over a year now. Makes me sick.

Trees being cut faster than they grow is due to overpopulation. Do the needful.

I have a giant oak tree like that. From my house we have to walk through a path at about 50 yards to get to it then it all opens up and there's that majestic tree. Its where we have all our parties at, birthday, grad, etc.

My granddaughter's first time seeing it was interesting to watch. She was 3. Her jaw dropped and she stopped walking and said whoahhhhhh as she gazed upon it. Even at that age she knew it was majestic. Everybody climbs in it and sits. The limbs are fucking yuge. I have lanterns out there and whatnot. I have a couple metal benches and a wooden swing bench there. Sometimes I sit out there and chill.

That's funny. I had the same reaction as your three year old today when I came upon this tree. I didn't know it was there until I did.

My Grandmother had a very large Oak in her back yard. My siblings, cousins and I spent several wonderful summers climbing and playing in that tree. Around dusk MamMaw would call us all inside for dinner. She was the best cook I ever knew. Awww Man. Sweet memories.

I have 4 of these in my front yard. They're a pain in the ass

I have large, very old Sugar Maples and they are dying before my eyes. Any bad weather brings large limbs to the yard. On the bright side I don't have to go far for firewood.

There's one like this in the middle of a perfectly groomed yard at the end of my street near the park. Fucker is huge.

There's one a few miles away that's easily twice the size. I'll grab a picture next time I visit that park. We have some really incredible trees here in North Florida.

I have two giant oaks in my yard. One being 8 feet from my house, the other 15 feet from my house. Total shade for me. There must be about 70 more in my neighborhood and all are protected. Nice.

Nice oak. We have poison oaks, live oaks, and cork oaks on this part of the CA coast. Valley oaks are an interior species.

On open hillsides the branches are usually clean. When they're in forests they get furry like that but more with lichens and moss.

There was moss all over one side of it at the base. I was resisting the urge to climb it, and was looking for a good place to start. My wife talked me out of it, and I was barefoot at the time. Awesome tree though.

There's something almost mystical about old trees like that. My imagination starts wandering and wondering about all the things that may have been done in the shade of it's branches. It's teeming with life, had to be a multigenerational home to all kinds of animals. Really cool to just take it all in.
