My main hobby is gaming. I've put thousands of hours into various games, and have almost 5k in my favorite game. Yeah the time could be used productively, but I have a bad memory and would forget about learning whatever it is.

Gaming is a relatively harmless and cheap hobby compared to some other hobbies or vices (eg: wearing spandex and fucking up motor traffic on a bicycle or alcoholism) people seem to gravitate to.
Pros: Relatively cheap-- minus periodic hardware requirements & doesnt require any travel (which can be $$$ depending on where you live), long hours of entertainment/mental engagement & stimulation/some degree of constant problem solving activity.
Cons: Limited/no physical activity for long periods of time, big opportunity cost in terms of time usage that could be spent on (arguably) more productive/real life enriching activities (eg: learning a language, starting a business, securing some food independence/gardening, etc).
But just like every other hobby or vice in existence, it does become cringe (eg: greasy neckbeards mentioned in other posts) when it becomes your entire life unless you're actually making a living off it somehow.
I recently met a guy in his late 40s that probably at least a 50,000 USD lego collection, he has two grown daughters-- so you know didn't actually waste his whole life on a child's toy. But I'm on definitely on the fence about it.
There's a cadre of these creatures that frequent a place I used to bartend at, and they're every bit as reprehensible as you described. Allow me to add some details that I had the great displeasure to observe in the wild. First, they all look roughly the same. Different heights, but they all have this doughy, amorphous body type. Greasy, unkempt hair and hands. Many have long, untrimmed fingernails. All have a sickly pallor, as if the sun refuses to shine on them. They speak in the language of reddit, self assured while lacking a basic self awareness. It's impossible for them to encounter something they don't already know everything about, though their intelligence is middling at the best of times though quite often non existent. They are creatures of habit, and easily offended with the slightest deviation of that habit. They are addicted to the cold comfort of the mundane. Adversity is a stranger to them, they know not the meaning of hard work or any lessons in loss. It would be quite easy to believe they were created in a lab using the same mold.
