High School sports are the apex of "our team". The opportunity to be on a team made up of people that you grew up with is not replicable. 12 years potentially with same group of classmates.

If you're good enough to go off to college and play, the feeling of "team" is greatly diminished. New people, never played with before at all, never caught crawdads together or slept over or had a crush on their sister or whatever. Pro sports even less.
