There are rare earth minerals in Ukraine, but not nearly anywhere near the amount that the US already has and hasn't even begun to exploit. It was never about the minerals in Ukraine; Trump just used that line as a way to get American companies and employees into Ukraine so that if Russia continued to fight the war after the ceasefire agreement was made, it would be considered a hostile action towards America and America could directly take on Russia. Russia has been in a proxy war with NATO through Ukraine, NATO is all over Ukraine, with mercenaries posing as "advisors" to Ukrainian forces, even though they're just hired killers. With Zelensky making a complete fool of himself, which everyone here already knew, and America pulling away from Ukrainian support, it was basically like Trump was signaling to the world that NATO has just collapsed. No doubt Zelensky, and therefore, NATO, is going around and doing a desperate bid to collect the pieces and keep the war machine going as long as possible before NATO collapses in a heap. NATO was a big war-for-profit machine; now that the primary funding has been cut through Trump's attempts to broker peace, it's only going to become more overt who the parties who scream for war are answering to.

Mmm, no. Rare earths are actually pretty common. The problem is refining it, which produces a crapload of pollution, to the point where most countries have banned it. (It's not just the EPA being bitches.) So the plan is to get it from crap countries they don't mind polluting.

All the good stuff is in the Donbas area, which is controlled by Russia and they are not going to give it up.
