I've seen a bunch of clips of King's guard interactions. They reminded me of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier's guards in Washington, D.C.. It's always interesting to watch military decorum being forced upon massive groups of civilian tourists.
These horses are cool, though. There's a sign that says "This horse will bite or kick you, don't touch it or the reigns". But the horse is always nice to disabled people or little kids- I suspect that the rider is largely in charge of who gets bitten and who gets a nice little nuzzle.
It's a position all about maintaining a tradition- militaries tend to take that shit really seriously. These guys make me think of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier guards.
I said this above, but it's worth repeating... I suspect that the riders have more control over their mounts than they'd like us to think. They spend loads of time with their horses, training in riding and in maintaining a disciplined guard.
Over time, that horse will begin to sort of know you on a level that's hard to describe. Horse riders understand this well, others achieve a similar bond with working dogs or other animals. They know what you're feeling, they know what you want them to do. Every tiny shift in your weight has meaning to them, something they understand from spending thousands of hours riding with you.
So, when a handicapped person shows up, a few subtle movements by the rider, and the horse gives them a little nuzzle and a great photo op. Some smelly chink tourist steps in and stand way too close, the rider pulls the reigns and twists it in a very specific manner- and the horse tries to take the chink's ear off. It's brilliant!
