I've seen some really nasty elastic and bamboo based projectile firing systems a child could make.

I'm in a climate where bamboo naturally grows...might add some to my backyard. Good crafting material.

Unless you want bamboo everywhere, I would recommend barriers when planting. When installing a sheet metal barrier, dig a trench at least 4 feet deep and line the sides with galvanized sheet metal overlapping the pieces by about 1 foot and protruding 3" above the soil line to prevent rhizomes from growing over the top. Some people use high-density polyethylene instead of metal since it won't rust. Rhizomes can travel up to 20' though unless you get a clumping variety of bamboo. While useful, bamboo is very difficult to prevent growth where you don't want it and very difficult to kill.

Yeah screw the running bamboo, just get clumping varieties. There are lots of awesome ones including the giant timber bamboo like Oldhamii.
