When he finally gets there she's dead, where after he lapses into a period of alcoholic remorse .. not for me, it remains a mystery why so many singers / bands / groups have covered it.

St. James Infirmary is a New Orleans classic, going way back to the early days of blues and jazz. It was actually about a poor people's hospital in San Francisco, CA. First recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1928, but the lyrics were written by a Ukrainian jew. The music was originally recorded by the California Ramblers in the song 'Charleston Cabin', performed as a fox trot.
