A little before I was born, being a single mother was something where people felt bad for you and people talked in a low whisper about them like they had a deadly disease. Getting money from the Govt for raising kids as a single (unmarried) parent was only a fairly recent thing for modern society - iirc somewhere around the 70's (at least here in NZ).
It was shameful and something to be made almost a pariah for.
