A little before I was born, being a single mother was something where people felt bad for you and people talked in a low whisper about them like they had a deadly disease. Now, it is not only celebrated, but they even have their own subsection of greeting cards, apparently. Plus, the Black baby would be treated like some sort of abomination.

Getting money from the Govt for raising kids as a single (unmarried) parent was only a fairly recent thing for modern society - iirc somewhere around the 70's (at least here in NZ).
It was shameful and something to be made almost a pariah for.
