Theres no such thing as free will. We live with the illusion of free will. Behavior is determined by genetics and culture, maybe some environmental factors like disease and nutrition or toxins. Its really important to focus on issues related to natural selection in this debate.

There are multiple genes that control/implement male sexual behavior (or female sexual behavior.) They have to work just right together. Not only is their a potential for an overly feminine male to arise but theres also a potential for an overly masculine male to arise. Too much androgens may result in homocidal or otherwise antisocial behaviors. Because of the polygenic nature of maleness, you will get a range of phenotypes in human males. Some may not have the right stuff to be heterosexual. (Sexual dimorphism occurs in the brain as well as the body. That brain dimorphism is likely how heterosexuality is implemented.

I haven’t even gone into how infectious disease or exposure to chemicals might disrupt the normal sexual dimorphism process in the brain. Some argue that immunological dysfunction in the mother can also affect brain development through androgen levels.

Then there is the cultural enforcement of sexual norms which also plays a role in sexual orientation and can be disrupted.

Comparable issues apply to femaleness as well. There are lots of factors that can affect heterosexual behavior. There are likely multiple pathologies or paths to homosexuality and other sexual pathologies (i.e., many causes)

The fact that homos may not be to blame for their behavior seems dangerous to some people because it might weaken a key cultural weapon against homosexuality, taboo. Theres less homosexuality when homos get thrown off buildings. But Id personally prefer knowing the truth than a useful lie. And also, do we want “borderline” genotypes reproducing at similar rate to more hetero genotypes?
