The inverted cross is known as the Petrine Cross, aka St. Peter's Cross. He was sentenced to be crucified, but requested to be crucified upside-down, to make a point that the values of those crucifying him were inverted.

It makes sense that the Papacy would use it, given that a Pope is also known as a successor to St. Peter. The Petrine Cross has been a Christian symbol almost as long as Christianity has been around.

That hall doesn’t resemble a serpent. Its just an arch. A photo of it from a particular perspective made it look a little like a reptile face. If I see a cloud that looks like a reptile to me I don’t assume clouds are satanic. I feel resentful for having to explain this.
