Havin a pretty good day today

submitted by Not_a_redfugee to whatever 1 dayJun 6, 2025 15:20:15 ago (+29/-0)     (whatever)

A customer at work gave me this big ass wooden crate. It is build sturdy and has these nice latches on the side to take the side off, and it has some tough caster wheels on the bottom. Loaded it into my work truck and took it home. I'm gonna make a chicken coop out of it.

I was given a “crate” today too! It’s true. It’s an old Coca-Cola like bottle holder thing… wooden like a casket, rubbed worn from time like my soul….,probably gonna put crap in it because you can never have enough crap….., when you get put in a box forever.

R.I.P and always remember to recycle…….teeth

Sounds like a great pot for a large bamboo. Line and seal it with the 30 mil polypropylene they use for bamboo barrier to protect the wood. Removable side will let you trim the rhizomes back every few years as it fills in.

Just build a chicken coop. Save the crate for the bodies.

What kind of chickens are you going to get?

[ - ] Not_a_redfugee [op] 5 points 1 dayJun 6, 2025 15:44:24 ago (+5/-0)

I already have some feathery ones

So, you're not going with pre-plucked chickens.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 5 points 23 hoursJun 6, 2025 17:46:35 ago (+5/-0)

If I never smell wet chicken again for the rest of my life that will be just fine.

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 6 points 23 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:03:12 ago (+6/-0)

I've never smelled wet chicken, but I have smelled a lot of wet dogs. If wet chicken is worse than wet dog, I understand how you feel.

[ - ] Peleg 5 points 23 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:19:24 ago (+5/-0)

Oh, I don't know about it being worse than wet dog, but it's very bad. Maybe it was just the whole thing combined.
We'd take a bunch of chickens and chop off their heads. The children had the job of catching them after their heads were chopped off. That was always a dangerous sport. After you grabbed a few you'd dunk them in a huge pot of scalding hot water. The second you pulled one out of the water you start yanking the feathers out. Always burned the shit out of my hands. That's the part where the smell comes in. Here you are, tired, covered in blood, hands feeling like they are on fire, and the smell hits you! Nauseating.
With a wet dog you usually can get away from the smell. With the chickens you have to finish the job. Absolutely disgusting.

Am remembering that odor from childhood. It reeks.

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 0 points 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:23:50 ago (+0/-0)

The worst for me was stewing-canning garden picked tomatos.

To this day I hate raw tomatos all thanks to that gag-inducing smell rolling off them as they boiled. I love salsa, ketchup, tomato soup, and etc. But will never fucking ever eat a stewed, or raw tomato.

[ - ] big_fat_dangus 2 points 23 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:42:40 ago (+2/-0)

I know this feel. Trying to get all the little fuckers after the bigger feathers are pulled is one of the most tedious experiences life has to offer.

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:57:05 ago (+2/-0)

Good lord. That sounds horrific. I wasn't raised on a farm or around chickens so there's no way I would ever have been exposed to that, and I have a new respect for anyone who had to do that disgusting chore. I remember Garrison Keillor (the Prairie Home Companion guy) telling a story about slaughtering chickens as you described, and one got away after it was decapitated and just kept running.

[ - ] WhiteCollarCriminal 2 points 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:53:25 ago (+2/-0)

How can a chicken keep running after it's head is cut off? I don't know much about chickens but don't you need the brain to coordinate something like running?

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 3 points 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 22:07:06 ago (+3/-0)

IIRC, a chicken's autonomous functions still work as long as even a little of the brain stem is still in the neck. There was a guy in the early 1900s who kept a headless chicken alive for a couple years and took it to freak shows.

As for chicken-related work, no comment other than "it's fowl".

Oh, man, I forgot about that one! Yes, it's true, I read about it years ago in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not!" His name was Mike the Headless Chicken.

Breaking their neck prior to dropping the chop on them helps.

[ - ] paul_neri 1 point 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 22:02:54 ago (+1/-0)

I'm now a vegan and have been for most of my adult life. I once worked on a farm as a young person and had to hold turkeys down as the farmer chopped their heads off.Didn't bother me at the time!

[ - ] Her0n 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:57:44 ago (+2/-0)

My god, I've only had chickens for eggs around me.

[ - ] WhiteCollarCriminal 0 points 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:54:26 ago (+0/-0)

Looks like you missed out on the best part! Go git sum chickens and chop off their haids! 😂

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 0 points 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:20:44 ago (+0/-0)

But the farmyard fresh, fried chicken was TASTY AF.

Rubber gloves always worked for me to lessen the burn.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 2 points 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:13:03 ago (+2/-0)

Really? We chickens smell like leather to me, which I think is awesome. I like the smell of wet chickens.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 1 point 20 hoursJun 6, 2025 20:48:06 ago (+1/-0)

I should have known a sicko like you existed somewhere on this site!

You probably like the smell of burning the fluff hairs off after you pluck them too.........never mind, I don't want to know weirdo. You disgust me.

[ - ] paul_neri 1 point 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:59:58 ago (+1/-0)

7/10

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 0 points 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:16:38 ago (+0/-0)

I thought 9/10 but Imma lil' biased.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 22:18:39 ago (+1/-0)

Bro, I’ve never plucked a chicken in my life. I love chickens. I have chickens and I don’t eat chicken. I’m talking about chickens that are wet from the rain, or whatever.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 1 point 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:15:27 ago (+1/-0)

Well when you do it by hand you boil water and dunk them in then you pull the feathers, each and every one. Finally, there are little fluffy hairs and you burn those off with a torch. The whole damn process smells to high heaven and you stink like it.

I've done my share, never again. Give me some good ole GMO chemical filled, hormone injected mystery meat any day.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 18 hoursJun 6, 2025 23:16:13 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah, I’d never do all that. Gross.

[ - ] Her0n 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:56:05 ago (+2/-0)

Sphynx chickens

[ - ] Deplorablepoetry 2 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:44:30 ago (+2/-0)

To get to the other side.

[ - ] WhiteCollarCriminal 0 points 19 hoursJun 6, 2025 21:57:41 ago (+0/-0)

Is a chickens inate gps enough to get to the other side once it's head is cut off?

[ - ] registereduser 0 points 1 dayJun 6, 2025 15:36:09 ago (+1/-1)*

Get some guineafowl instead, thank me later. Basically chickens, but smarter.

[ - ] Sector2 3 points 23 hoursJun 6, 2025 18:42:02 ago (+3/-0)

Ducks for the superior eggs.

[ - ] registereduser 0 points 22 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:02:59 ago (+1/-1)

Shut the fuck up, you humorless cunt.

[ - ] doginventer 1 point 21 hoursJun 6, 2025 19:55:00 ago (+1/-0)

Exactly what you will be shouting at the guinea fowl within days.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 5 hoursJun 7, 2025 11:43:36 ago (+0/-0)

The fuck can be amusing sometimes, or is at least an informative data point.
