Let's say his bodyweight is 150 lb. The 75 oz. (or so) that he just drank would be enough to send his BAC to about 1.5%. Like @WhiteCollarCriminal said above, vomiting up all of that liquor so quickly probably mitigated the problem. I agree it could have saved his life.
Keep in mind, respiratory shutdown and coma can occur above .4%.
There are extreme documented cases considered credible of people surviving up to 1.6%, but these are so rare they're pretty much negligible. This old guy might have pulled through, but he would definitely have needed hospitalization to make it. And he would have brain damage.
That’s so much ethanol. Can’t fathom the organs having the enzymes and resources to handle that much without getting damaged. From the intestines it’s straight through the liver via blood.
