It was a Tuesday and the city of 650,000 inhabitants was packed with additional refugees fleeing from the east. The first bombs started falling at around 22 hours, when the families were at home in bed and targeted the densely populated inner city that was completely destroyed.
After a pause of three hours, a second wave of bombs was dropped, aimed at killing the rescuers this time, who promptly arrived from all surrounding areas trying to help the injured or rescue people from under the debris.
My grandfather was one of those trapped in a cellar. He passed away last year at the age of 91. Never let this get memory-holed.
