Homemade stainless steel Bonmusica style violin shoulder rest.
(Welding)Been looking at
this model and was waiting on pay day to order one but then I figured fuck that shit, it's overpriced!
So I dug up some
scraps of 20ga stainless and got to work.
The first thing I wanted to make were the clips holding on to the violin. I cut a
rough pattern and found the required hardware, then I
shaped them according to my
scientific calculations. Followed by some silver brazing to
assemble them.
After that I made the
little 90° parts that connect them to the shoulder rest.
The next part was the main shoulder rest, started by tracing it out & drilling
adjustment holes for the top part & then I bent
one tip & soldered a nut to it, I finish that part by doing the same at the other end. Following that, I added
the tab on which the foam will be glued.
Then I needed to do the
curved part of the shoulder rest, the adjustable one. A strip of stainless with two bolts brazed onto it.
I assembled it to make sure everything
fit together nicely before doing the foam padding. Toolbox drawer foam
for the clips and the lining from a holesaw case I had laying around for
the shoulder padding. Before trying it on I obviously gave it a
quick polish & painted the areas that were hard to reach.
Did the
final fitting and
clamped it on, looks better than that 100$ german painted steel one imo.
Now time to adjust it practice for a bit.
