MIG Welding for a chump.      (Welding)

I have a entry level mig welder I picked up a few years back and I am embarrassed to say I haven't fired it up a single time. I got it with the intention of repairing my lawn mower buggy but never put in the time or effort to learn. This would be a very entry level welder, it has flux core wire that is fed through the welder.
Can anyone recommend some very basic projects or a path towards learning? I have watched a number of videos and know about rocking it back and forth. Also, I am a little concerned about getting electrocuted so I don't know what the level of danger is. I do have an auto darkening mask but would probably just wear work gloves and a regular jean jacket to start?

Rambling prelude. Main job begins at two minutes forty seconds, with a large cast steel part that broke. Deep weld. Ends up on milling machine at the end.

Any recommendations for decent tube notching setup?

Was looking at that eastwood notcher and seems ok but have not seen one firsthand.

Merry Christmas faggots! Have some OC, made myself a pair of stainless steel "Flowmaster Delta 40" mufflers for the truck. original content     (Welding)

Doesn't look like much from the outside but there's somewhat a bit of work inside of these. I'm redoing my catback next week with 2.5" stainless pipe, a true dual exhaust setup with an H-pipe.

After shopping around I saw these:

https://files.catbox.moe/ndx3bf.jpg

Apparently they'll help me annoy the fuck out of faggots, especially electric car drivers so I figured let's do it but fuck spending 400$, I'm a make my own.

So with about 100$ of 304 stainless I prepped all the parts:

https://files.catbox.moe/9ug5ox.jpg

I took very special care while shaping the internals, a hi-tech plywood jig & a ball-peen hammer later I had them air-flow concentrating thingamajigs shaped.

https://files.catbox.moe/nkgtl3.jpg

No expenses spared either, i recycled that 0.15$ plywood jig to help me bend that 18ga sheet metal:

Once I had all that shit tacked up inside i was ready to close it up:

Them fancy lips on the internals were to allow me to plug weld the skin on top of the core:

There ya have it, fancy stainless mufflers for my truck. Probably doing the new exhaust next week if I feel like driving at the shop at some point, we'll see.

My friend is a welder for SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority). He works on the railroads and trolley tracks. I sent a group of friends the recent WWII Nazi propaganda of liberating Ukrainian areas, which included the war-torn Soviet roads.

My friend wrote back:
"Hmmm, the Soviet roads look a lot like our trolley tracks"

It made me laugh.

All three of my basement exercise machines currently need welding     (Welding)

The 1978 Schwinn Exerciser needs the handle bars welded into the hole. (I was going to try golf club epoxy and the current quick fix is super glue)

I just broke the weld on the stair stepper tonight, which motivated the post. I'm fuckin so pissed about that one. I thought I had found a stepper that could handle my 260 lbs. Wrong.

The machine with the rubber bands jimmyrig is a CardioGlide, a cheap version of a rower, that is actually fantastically effective. You can see the hook on the shock absorber has broken off from the bar connected to the seat. (obvi the rubber bands are bc the shock is broken)

They're all heavy, pain in the ass to move, machines. I suppose I could go to a body shop and try there. With what they're worth (about zippo) it's debatably not worth the effort: but they're mine, you know, I love um.

Obviously, best case scenario is someone on this sub is from Chicagoland and we can work something out. Super long shot, I know, but hey I made this post finally.....which I honestly, if you remember, said I was going to, some months ago.

Homemade stainless steel Bonmusica style violin shoulder rest.     (Welding)
submitted by Rotteuxx to Welding 3.3 years ago (+14/-0)
8 comments last comment...
Been looking at this model and was waiting on pay day to order one but then I figured fuck that shit, it's overpriced!

So I dug up some scraps of 20ga stainless and got to work.

The first thing I wanted to make were the clips holding on to the violin. I cut a rough pattern and found the required hardware, then I shaped them according to my scientific calculations. Followed by some silver brazing to assemble them.

After that I made the little 90° parts that connect them to the shoulder rest.

The next part was the main shoulder rest, started by tracing it out & drilling adjustment holes for the top part & then I bent one tip & soldered a nut to it, I finish that part by doing the same at the other end. Following that, I added the tab on which the foam will be glued.

Then I needed to do the curved part of the shoulder rest, the adjustable one. A strip of stainless with two bolts brazed onto it.

I assembled it to make sure everything fit together nicely before doing the foam padding. Toolbox drawer foam for the clips and the lining from a holesaw case I had laying around for the shoulder padding. Before trying it on I obviously gave it a quick polish & painted the areas that were hard to reach.

Did the final fitting and clamped it on, looks better than that 100$ german painted steel one imo.

Now time to adjust it practice for a bit.
