He actually stopped the tanks on their way out, after the square was cleared, which I guess was practically speaking kind of dumb, but symbolically heroic. When the army first arrived, the mob of people actually stopped them and they turned back. But the government had them go in again two weeks later with an order to clear the square by morning via any means necessary. Would have been interesting if the military had decided instead to side with the people, but that's not the world we live in.

Pretty sure he was carrying a plastic bag, not luggage.

That chinaman committed a HATE CRIME against that [mostly] peaceful gay-pride parade!

This is something worthy of respect.

Notice how the respect people have for this comes naturally. No one told them to have it. No one needed to or wanted to.

There are no flamboyant and heavily endorsed parades in the street celebrating it. No colorful merchandise designed to entice toddling children into a belief or lifestyle.

It is a genuine and naturally formed respect. Its something that receives a quiet appreciation mixed with a tinge of awe.

This is a bit of a tough subject because the CCP has done a decent job memory holeing the whole incident.
I believe your dad is correct, I want to say I once saw a photo or maybe video of what happens right after this picture was taken and the same lone Chinaman is down on the ground.

After a little refresher reading it seems his identity and ultimate fate are not widely/publicly known. So he probably got disappeared, and my memory of seeing him down is apparently false.

Why believe his dad? The video footage shows secret service take him away to presumably torture to death.

I was told he successfully turned the tanks back, but the reality is we have no idea what happened to him. The CCP buried the whole incident HARD.

According to witness accounts the tanks rolled in and turned protesters into paste. A lot of people went missing and their families were told they committed suicide and not to ask too many questions.

No. There's footage of him being escorted away by other citizens. He then gets lost in the crowd.

I don't think so, there's a short documentary with the guy that took the photo.
