I had a buddy that was a Golden Gloves boxer when he was in the Army. I saw him lay out a couple of guys in bar fights. (One punch each.) The thing that intrigued me was that he would always put his left hand behind their head as he punched them with his right. Then he would gently lay them down on the floor.

I asked him why he did this and he said that the punch he delivered wouldn't leave them permanently damaged, but if he let them fall backwards and hit the floor that could cause permanent brain damage. He didn't want to permanently damage them, nor did he want to end up in prison.
