I think I realized something dealing with my daughter today. When she's escalated misbehavior in the past, I've tried an approach like: no consequence, no consequence, warning, warning, warning, big consequence (e.g., angry yelling). I think I need to switch to: warning, small consequence, medium consequence, big consequence. I.e., as a young, inexperienced lady, she probably doesn't fully understand e.g., non-verbal cues and intonations that should give her a clue that she's starting to get herself into trouble. I'm starting to think that forgiveness and overlooking minor offenses might be better reserved for those who've reached some level of maturity.

I think there's also something to the idea that most [Western?] women don't respect the potential for physical violence enough. I.e., men typically have a much more intuitive sense that violence is always lurking just beneath the surface so they're more careful to defuse disagreements that aren't worth fighting over.

Another thought that I heard recently: "A gentleman never offends anyone--unintentionally".

Yelling isn't a consequence, it's a challenge to a verbally oriented girl. You cut off their words point blank. Arguing is admitting you could be wrong and that just means you probably are wrong to her. You undermine your authority participating in fake intellectualism.
