The amount billed doesn't equal the amount paid. Insurance companies routinely negotiate better prices. Also, as the father of 4, I can say that is about 5x the average for each of my kids. There must have been some complications or something to get up that high, or is it due to living in the big city? And furthermore, hospital bills are so high due to covering services for the uninsured and illegals. Her argument is totally misplaced, she should be pissed at the illegals driving up the prices, not asking for more gubmint gibs.
If “you” can’t save up 5k then why are “you” having kids anyway?
It's still the result of saving for about a year while cutting on every costs and doesn't leave you much room if something were to come up. Is a professional midwife even needed?
Mrs. Fascinus has grown us more children than most families these days and I've been an active participant in delivering all of them. It's fair to say I know my way around the process and, that being said, things happen.
We've had 2 descend with the cord wrapped around their necks. Would you have the presence of mind to notice? The knowledge of anatomy and dexterity to be able to untangle the gristly, slippery cord? Even with an adrenaline dump?
Will you be so finely attuned to the progression of labor that you are prepared to give your wife what she needs, when she needs it?
Are you willing to invest $$ in equipment (e.g. birthing tub)?
What about after-care?
Don't get me wrong, many couples do this well by themselves. If we had to, I know we could (one of our births was unassisted and it went fine) and, for my part, I would gladly engage their services again if we are blessed enough to have more.
These numbers are imaginary. No one pays them. For one thing, the hospital corp is going to tell the government they provided 50k worth of care while generously only charging the patient 5k. Then they'll write off the difference on their taxes, so they don't have to pay tax on whatever they did clear. And they do make money. Whether they operate as nonprofit or not, they pay out big checks to a CEO and who knows how many other assholes.
It's corrupt, inefficient, cronyist, government-funded. Everything negative you can think of about the American system (call it capitalism or whatever) comes to a head in the healthcare industry. And that nigger Obama deserves a lot of credit for making it worse.
Should have been married to a man with health insurance before she got knocked up. Next she will be upset that she can't find dates and hold a job because she is perpetually late.
I don't think the race is what's at issue here. Should an annual salary be required to give to some filthy fucking hospital ( you remember doctors and hospitals right? The places that forced you to wear masks and get vaccines and were happy with every new tyranny?) just to have a child? Fuck doctors and fuck hospitals.
2 things. first, what everyone else is saying, that price isn't what she will pay. second, in the us people are pampered quite a bit, and i couldn't imagine that julie won would get the care back home that she would get here.
in my town there is a huge room, a bed for dad, non-shared room, days for recovery, hot tubs, etc. I would say it is mostly unnecessary, but is nice.
we have this issue anywhere that is government funded or regulatory captured. just like all colleges are rated by the number of tv's they have per student and what percentage of the walls are glass.

Better yet, hire a midwife and have them at home for ~5k.

Midwife is the best way IMO.

$5 k is a lot of crushed up Ritalin, and two of Big Mama's half-her-size daughters instead.

Your call.
In my opinion it's money well spent.
