Difference is when something in Windows doesn't work you are shit out of luck.

[ - ] HughBriss 4 points 2.6 yearsSep 30, 2022 09:39:56 ago (+4/-0)

Right, unlike Linux, where you can find five different answers to the same problem and none of them work. When you ask for help, Linux users tend to be brusque and dismissive. Not much better than SOL.

WHEN COBOL BOOMERS ATTACK

Grandpa Slackware says quit bitching and recompile the kernel again

That's generally the attitude I get from Linux users. Insults and derision. Rarely any actual help or sympathy. Linux is for hobbyists.

Depends on your dist. For gentoo you have a ton of flexibility to try out many different versions of the offending package and different configurations for compiling it. Normally one works.

Windows has the exact same shit.

Not quite. Networking computers is difficult with Linux, at least with the distros I tried. A friend tried to get me interested, but after not being able to communicate with either another linux box or a Windows box and messing with Samba for way longer than I needed to, I shut down the Linux boxes and installed Windows. They all talk to each other without my having to labor on it for hours.

That's weird because every time I try to get windows filesharing to work between two computers, even the same two computers I had it working on a month ago, I end up on stackexchange trying various hacks. It seems Microsoft will update my computer between attempts in ways that break the filesharing I had established. Also, Microsoft reserves the built-in tools you need to properly configure networking for the Professional editions, where most of my computers ship with the Home edition. Microsoft wants you to login with a Microsoft account -- without which some of the newer features of Windows don't work, but this very login method makes it difficult to engage in filesharing on your LAN.

Whereas with Linux I just setup NFS. The basic procedure has been the same since before Linux existed. Nowadays, there are a few magic flags you have to set to keep eliminate barriers introduced by the distros in the name of security. Samba is explicitly a tool for interfacing with Windows -- Windows file sharing protocol is called SMB, and I agree that it is difficult to configure. I always figured that was due to the Windows end because of all the trouble I have there.

I don't really have a dog in this fight. I tend to use more Linux at work and more Windows at home. Windows is nice because it comes installed on laptops, and all the drivers are ensured to work by the manufacturer with all their "bloatware". So all your laptop's features "just work." This is also true of Windows for desktops that are pre-built, but it's less relevant for desktops (fewer widgets). Windows is also preferable for gaming. OTOH developing software on Windows sucks. To the point that I often end up working in a pseudo-Unix environment, which is pretty common. I know there are some pre-stripped versions of Windows you can install, but if you use an OEM install or install from Microsoft ISOs, it will annoy you to no end with updates, intrusive "malware" protection, and at the end of the day it's still less secure than Linux.

With Linux you just turn on ssh then use sftp on the machine. You can even setup ssh / sftp mounts etc so your local “drives” are actually remote drives. All just a few command line inputs away.

For sure and authentication makes sense. That's my main complaint with SMB. Unless you pay for "Pro" M$ wants you to login with a M$ account, and it doesn't work half the time. It feels like gambling whether I will be able to access my share. I'm just making an old server into a NAS, among other things, anyways. It has two 1TB SSDs with S/W RAID0. I'm not that worried about availability, and I have shitter drives for backups.

That's just a bit of gatekeeping to keep the retards away. Once you are past that Linux is awesome. It's like how we call new people around here that they are niggerfaggots that should piss off to reddit and never come back.

My work gave me a windows laptop and forces me to use it for sec policy. But my boss doesnt get told shit, so he still rocks his own shit in linux, but now I'm stuck behind the wall trying to unfuck everything to either crosscompile or actually run in windows. Its a real pain in the ass. Dev'ing in linux is much more fun and in the end, easier.

He's 100% right about linux folks though, especially the ones who specialize in the minutia, they are all such assholes, even to each other. There may occur some lovely times when they are greatly appreciated, but most of the time they just bitch about how the question was asked. This never stops regardless of who does the asking or their skill level, the goal for many is ego.

No surprise. Most programmers are autistic incels without social skills.

[ - ] thoughtcryme 4 points 2.6 yearsSep 30, 2022 10:45:05 ago (+4/-0)

You'd really enjoy a day in my office. When I am the most socially skilled, we have a problem.

[ - ] CoronaHoax 1 point 2.6 yearsOct 1, 2022 02:23:06 ago (+1/-0)

What’s interesting is in some countries people become programmers because they ended being social outcasts and lives on a computer.

In others it’s just a high paying job that smart people can do. If you tell a female from one country you’re a programmer she’ll immediately drop her opinion of you slightly above piss and say no thanks I don’t think there is literally a thing we have say to each other. However if you tell a female from the other country you’re a programmer her pussy will get wet and say “you must be smart”.

Normally Linux is actually easier and quicker to get running on a pc now because it includes literally all the possible drivers from the start. And to install something, it’s all from a package manager that preinstalls all the dependencies.

True if you install your own OS which most people don't do with Windows

Linux needs a steering committee or somebody with a vision like Steve Jobs.

[ - ] bonghits4jeebus 0 points 2.6 yearsSep 30, 2022 11:02:40 ago (+0/-0)

There have always been multiple distros, but it used to be that people at RedHat made the decisions that users would end up seeing, but I guess there wasn't money in that

[ - ] taoV 0 points 2.6 yearsSep 30, 2022 12:14:45 ago (+0/-0)

True but the ones it sort of has is getting infiltrated by wokeness.

[ - ] Wahaha 0 points 2.6 yearsOct 1, 2022 03:42:39 ago (+0/-0)

I wouldn't appreciate that. You are essentially suggesting centralizing a decentralized system to provide a point that can be attacked or infiltrated. All organizations related to Linux are already infiltrated by woketards. It would be pretty bad if they had any actual power.

I reccomend "Safe Space Linux" for anyone complaining about getting made fun of when they don't know how to Linux.

[ - ] RabbiKinderschtupper 0 points 2.6 yearsSep 30, 2022 12:24:56 ago (+0/-0)

Linux would be great if it weren't for the absolutely aggressive autism in the community.
