man this device is just awesome and i just started to use it though. just got the lower end and stuck a 120 GB card in there because i'm gonna use it mostly as a stream device. i will only download a game just in case the power or internet goes out. not a fan of the linux part though since i use windows but like i said this device is just for streaming games from my PC.
the steamdeck is pretty huge but pretty comfty to use with your hands. i dont feel cramped like when i play with a regular controller.
this device is much better than the vita. any questions? i will try to answer the best that i can
Some folk have larger hands. For example, the first xbox controller was of a good size for me. But it was too large for most people so they shrunk it in later iterations.
Why? As a Windows gamer, changing to steamOS was different. Had to switch to desktop mode to edit configs. I dual boot, but lately been only on the win11 side. Checking out Android emulation rn, apparently is clunky on steamOS
their proton side its decent i'm not going to lie but yeah windows is far better for gaming. since i have a 5ghz router i dont feel any lag when gaming though i mostly play turn based rpgs
People used windows to support Bill Gates and his Evil Empire in developing the covid virus, in addition to all his other murders. Windows users also think Bill Gates is the best person to own America's farmland.
the linux side is horrible.i use to dual boot my old computer with linux like version that was friendly for window users but that was when i had windows 10 on it.
this debian? side of windows is a mess to deal with
Every time I boot into Windows I put up with 5-15 minutes of my hard drive cranking, if I'm lucky. If I'm unlucky, it has to do a non-trivial update and can take an hour or more to settle down.
something is wrong with your machine either way. my gaming pc does have win 11 and so far the SSD and mechanical drives are silent and working rather well
The hard drive works fine. It's just that I can see when it's busy, which slows the machine down as Windows is a bloated piece of shit, and it shows that by taking a long time to start up, or go through one of it's laborious updates. In Linux I'm booted in 30 seconds.
Well, the alternative is to go the iPhone route and design a tiny device with 100% custom parts that can never be fixed without spending an arm and a leg at an Apple store.
They could have made it repairable and slim. But being stuck using legacy parts (x86) makes that impossible. Why they ever thought x86 was the answer in a portable device astounds me.
LOL. OK, now I officially know that you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Let me guess, your credentials are "I once built a PC out of parts I bought on New Egg"?
There's no such thing as "repairable and slim". Watch a few of Louis Rossman's videos. He does "rogue repairs" for these slim devices. It requires specialized equipment worth thousands of dollars. You can't just swap out a part on an iPhone. Every video he does is calling out manufactures for designing hardware that can't be repaired. (hint, it's because shrinking the device requires custom hardware that you can't get off the shelf).
If you're too retarded to replace it with help from Valve's own official guides on how to do it yourself there's a repair shop they run you can ship it to as well. I understand not everyone is as smart as rocket ambulances.

Is this thing capable of replacing a desktop, or it is still just a good "media device"?
(Nine year old desktop has 32gb DDR4*, i7 4.0GHz, 1TB SSD, forgot what graphics card)

It's powerful enough to replace a desktop, but I wouldn't dare put windows on it.

Still sad that hardware from almost a decade ago still isn't in general consumer electronics. PC master race...apparently.

when one of your controllers craps out the whole thing is fucking useless.
It looks like the controllers are not easily replaceable.
