I'm thinking of buying a heat alarm because the smoke alarm goes off too often (false alarm) and in the middle of the night.

Lower the smoke alarm - instead of on ceiling, place it on a wall a bit below ceiling level

I have. It's on the top of a small cupboard. It was near the window and maybe smoke was getting in through cracks or somethin'? I can't risk it any more 'cos the neighbours will lynch me if it goes off again.

I have never experienced this wacky behavior of smoke detectors. It usually takes quite a lot of smoke to set them off. Move the thing and make sure it's not expired.

I was actually thinking the other day after some smoke in my kitchen that I wish the fire alarm had gone off, with as much smoke as there was. But it's not in the kitchen but a hallway next to the kitchen, and I tested it with fake smoke stuff and put a new battery in, so it is working. Just takes quite a bit to get it going. You should be able to find one like that.

So if you have the photoelectric one and you're getting false alarms, maybe you have a faulty/dysfunctional alarm. For the short term you could simply turn it off, unless you have frequent fires in your area...
