The confederacy had a decent army but they could not afford to throw away men like the union did. They did not resort to "scorched earth" tactics like the union. Grant won battles by sending men into the meat grinder over and over again until by force of sheer numbers the confederacy could not fight. He was willing to send good men to their deaths. Sherman burned farms, homes and estates during his march to the sea. He gave the freed niggers food and weapons and told them to rape and pillage.

Before these tactics the union was well on their way to losing. Generals before then had respect for men's lives and didn't involve civilians in the fighting
