They might have died right away. If the hull buckled during descent because of structural weakness, pretty much instant death. That is probably what happened.

Well the resting place is 3,800 meters and barometric pressure is 1 BAr p/10m approx. So basically 380x atmospheric pressure. From about 30m you can't even breathe normal air anymore, you have to breathe EANx/nitrox. 2.5-3BAR is what the human body can survive at, potentially 100BAR if using special equipment and trained like a madman.
Now quadruple the pressure and it's like a grape under a hydraulic press.
