As far as vote manipulation is concerned. I've said it before and I'll say it again, tie the number of down votes available to the amount of comments that have been given by that user. It's easy to up vote everything that comes across the frontpage to farm down votes. It's also easy to repost spam memes from other websites to farm down votes from new threads. The only way to make it so it's 100% obvious to everyone that someone is farming is to force them to leave a comment per down vote.

Ultimately I want this place to be a collection of communities, similar to reddit. In that sense, you shouldn't expect /new to have content which caters to you or even the site as a whole. If someone starts a sub dedicated to a specific topic and starts building it up with content, you might view it as spam when viewing /new. Especially if you hate the topic. And now their sub has posts full of downvotes by someone not even interested in the topic. With such a small website like this one, subverses act more like tags instead of independent communities. There's probably no solution to this problem without more traffic. You wouldn't go to reddit all/new and downvote content as spam because it's nonsensical. This is why I believe a ratio is a good idea for now. I will lower it to 3:1.

In a perfect scenario you wouldn't see those posts because you wouldn't subscribe to that sub. With a small community the site cannot operate in the way I imagine. I suppose could force everyone to subscribe to subs and only display the "default" ones by default but it would make a shitty experience with such a small community.

Ultimately I want this place to be a collection of communities, similar to reddit. In that sense, you shouldn't expect /new to have content which caters to you or even the site as a whole. If someone starts a sub dedicated to a specific topic and starts building it up with content, you might view it as spam when viewing /new. Especially if you hate the topic. And now their sub has posts full of downvotes by someone not even interested in the topic. With such a small website like this one, subverses act more like tags instead of independent communities. There's probably no solution to this problem without more traffic. You wouldn't go to reddit all/new and downvote content as spam because it's nonsensical. This is why I believe a ratio is a good idea for now. I will lower it to 3:1.

This place is kind of like the "CHEERS" (the 80's TV show) of the Internet. I know these Bastards! I have closer relationships with some of these guys & gals than I do with some of the people I know in real life.
I think it's a big mistake to dilute what we have here by opening our borders and letting masses of new people in too quickly. Upgoat has a certain spirit/vibe, we will lose that if we don't grow it slowly and smartly.
The better option in my unsolicited opinion, would be to gradually grow the site organically by letting in smaller more manageable numbers of people, and getting them get acclimated to the environment here, so that the Upgoat DNA isn't diluted with reddit/POAL think, and we lose the magic that is Upgoat (VOAT).

In a perfect scenario you wouldn't see those posts because you wouldn't subscribe to that sub. With a small community the site cannot operate in the way I imagine. I suppose could force everyone to subscribe to subs and only display the "default" ones by default but it would make a shitty experience with such a small community.
3:1 is nothing. People who are above that limit use DV way too liberally. Not enough people upvote for downvotes to be left unrestricted. Trolls would DV everything, not enough people would counter those votes, and it would be a negative experience to everyone, especially people actually taking the time to post content.
