GPS gives you three dimensional coordinates. It also know how high up you are. But those numbers are tricky to read because Cartesian coordinates on a sphere look like nonsense so the workings are hidden by software.
GPS does nothing but send out a signal which contains the position of that satellite. The receivers antenna receives the signal and can determine the 3d bearing of that signal. The receiver receives this information from a minimum of 4 of these satellites and can triangulate the position in 3 dimensions. All the position information is contained within the X axis (called latitude), the Y axis (called longitude), and the Z axis (called altitude). The GPS satellites "know" nothing other than their own position within this coordinate system. The satellites are not telling the receivers where the receivers are. The GPS satellites are telling the receivers where the satellites are and the receivers use that information to do its own triangulation.
The whole system is based on a spherical model of the earth that exactly mirrors every other spherical model available to virtually anyone.
This system is used millions of times a day by literally billions of people with no anomaly. Any deviation of reality from the model would show up as anomaly, but this doesn't happen.
Any attempt to hide software in the literally hundreds of millions of GPS receivers would be discovered and any idea of "compatmentalation" would be out the window.
And NONE of this is the issue. The ONLY issue that is relevant to this conversation is that GPS is accurate, and can be used to verify measured distances.
Flat earthers will argue about how GPS works. Towers and balloons versus satellites in space. And they do this because 32 satellites orbiting the earth proves, on its face, that 1. Satellites are real and in space, and 2. The earth is a sphere being orbited by these 32 satellites. So, they will talk about towers and balloons, and like you've suggested, are hiding the flat earth within the spherical model using math tricks. But, in the context addressed toward McNasty, it doesn't matter how you think GPS works. What matters is that you agree that it's accurate. Do you agree that it's accurate?
Once you acknowledge its basically accurate, even if it's within miles, the Earth can be proven to be a sphere in a number of ways. Two of the ways I've found, so far.
1. The comparison of the distance between two lines of longitude at a specific northerly latitude and the same two lines of longitude at the corresponding southerly latitude being equal and both being shorter than at the equator is only possible with a globe. That is a fundamental geometric principle of a sphere. This can ONLY be possible/practical with a sphere.
2. You can use mathematic equations that reference equations used only on spheres to determine the distance from any latitude to the poles and the equator. Equations that are a part of Spherical Geometry that do not exist in Euclidean Geometry.
Both of these methods are about distances and once you acknowledge that GPS distance measurements are accurate, these observations and mathematic calculations can be confirmed by GPS.
So, again, do you acknowledge that GPS is accurate when measuring distance? Literally billions of people depend on it, and its used millions of times every day, but flat earthers will refuse to acknowledge this because they know it obliterates their case.

The flat earth thing is a thorn for me, personally.
