New Zealand navy ship runs aground and sinks off Samoa, all crew onboard rescued

HMNZS Manawanui, the navy's specialist dive and hydrographic vessel, ran aground near the southern coast of Upolu on Saturday, Commodore Shane Arndell, the maritime component commander of the New Zealand Defence Force, said in a statement.

The vessel later capsized and was below the surface by 9am local time on Sunday, New Zealand Defence Force said.

A truly epic failure

Defence Minister Judith Collins described the grounding as a "really challenging for everybody on board".

Having a DEI hire will do that to a crew.

New Zealand's Navy is already working at reduced capacity with three of its nine ships idle due to personnel shortages.

As a former USCG Quartermaster who ran The Special Navigation Team through innumerable restricted water evolutions I can say with confidence that this grounding was inexcusable.

Nowhere in the story do they mention uncharted reef. If they knew they were operating in restricted waters there are procedures and precautions that should be standard on every Naval ship.

The Captain should be on the bridge if not actually taking the conn herself. Regardless of whether a junior person screwed up she ultimately has responsibility for the safety of the crew and ship.

What do you want to bet at first all her first officers were like will give her a try. Then they were like oh my God she's an idiot and we're going to cover for her and keep her from running the shit for ground. And then finally she was so obnoxious to them that they said well we're going to stop covering for her and let her ruin her career by running the ship around. I wonder how long that process took to go through.

It could just as well be that she had incompetent people in command positions and either was unable to recognize their incompetence or looked the other way on it because it would be hypocritical of her to hold others to a standard. It is my experience that DEI hires are extremely nepotistic. She likely filled her entire staff with diversity hires.

"I know that what has happened is going to take quite a bit of time to process," Ms Collins told the press conference.

They probably need to schedule therapy for the entire crew, and maybe set them up with service fish for comfort when they relive the trauma.

How did she manage to burn when the ship when surrounded by water, then run aground in the Pacific Ocean and manage to sink the ship when out of water?
