Seems the $9 NYC car tax is effectively clearing out the streets of traffic.

If so what's going to be the economic hit of effectively banning economic interaction in the city?

I wouldn't doubt once the tax revenue losses come in, from people now just avoiding the city entirely, that $9 tax is gonna go away real quick and celebrating libs are gonna be real mad confused on what's going on.

Mass transit in Japan also isn't subsidized by the government. The price people pay at the ticket gate is the actual price.

Also a good number of workers in Japan have their transit fares comped by their employers, so there's no worry about fare evasion.

And let's not forget the biggest reason of all: Japan is a mostly homogeneous, high-trust society that frowns upon the shenanigans you see on Western transit systems. More trust = more people riding the trains = more money.

For fun, let's look at the recovery ratio of two companies.

JR Central: 245.95% of operating expenses are met by passenger fares.

MTA: 24.44%. The rest of their expenses are met from government subsidies, taxes, tolls, etc.

Oh, and a lot of the railway companies in Japan own real estate around the stations. And since real estate in Japan is expensive, that's a lot of gravy on top of what they're already bringing in.

The increased number of subway users - will no doubt introduce fare hikes to offset all the increased user demand on the existing system. Reeeee.
They did a similar thing here years ago with banning of open fires etc for climata-changy and pushing everyone to clean green electricity/ heat pumps - 'oh vey - too much increased demand on the grid infrastructure - need to offset that with rampant price hikes, goyim'.
