I tried a ELI5 and went like this:

"There is a twon, in Africa, 10.000 blacks and 3 whites, the blacks commit 250 crimes in a year(mostly shoplifting but also some assault and maybe murder) , we also know that white suspects in this town have comitted 25 crimes, mostly rape and murder. You walk through a park and have to take a path left is one of the 3 white guys, to your right a black guy, both of them may or may not be criminals...."

25 crimes / 3 Whites = 8.3 crimes per White

250 crimes / 10,000 blacks = 0.025 crimes per black [or 40 blacks per crime] (lol)
